Mobile, AL - The Patriots squared off against the University of Xavier (La.) Wednesday morning, looking for some revenge after falling to their opponent earlier in the season. Unfortunately, Cumberlands was unable to come away with the win as their season came to an end with Xavier moving on by a final tally of 4-2.
Doubles play belonged to the Gold Rush with them taking the first two sets to grab the first point. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub's match at the #2 spot was the first to finish with them seeing defeat for just the sixth time this season, coming at the hands of Megh Patel and Jacobi Bain by a score of 6-3. Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu played as the Patriot's #1 tandem for just the third time this year with them unable to grab a win either. The Patriot duo was tasked with Xavier's Santiago Perez and Juan Ramierz who proved to be too tall a task as they were able to take the 6-2 win and jump out in front heading into singles play.
Martin Barbier helped Cumberlands knot things up at one apiece once singles began with him defeating Juan Ramierz as the Patriot's #2. Barbier grabbed his 11th wins in his last 12 tries with this victory as he handedly beat his counterpart. Martin was in complete control going solo with him able to beat Ramirez in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to add on to his historic campaign.
Xavier reclaimed the lead afterwards with a win at the #1 spot as UC's Mattis Le Montagner fell. Mattis was tasked with the Gold Rush's Santiago Perez who currently ranks 17th in the NAIA per the ITA and was chosen as the player of the year for a group of NAIA unaffiliated teams. Le Montagner did all he could to try and keep pace with the opposition, but to avail as he dropped the matchup 6-1, 6-2.
Luis Montull was next finish with him being dealt the same fate as Le Montagner, moving Xavier's lead out to 3-1. Montull competed as the Patriot's #5 and saw his match come to an end in straight sets, losing 6-3, 6-3. Martin Muller followed Luis out of the #4 spot, winning his contest to help keep Cumberlands alive. Muller had to fight hard for his win, but was able to pull it out in the end. Martin found himself in the middle of back-and-forth battles in both stanzas before taking control and scoring multiple points in a row to grab the win by a tally of 6-4, 6-4.
Last to finish was Hung-Ju Wu at #6 with his match coming to an end with him on the wrong side of the scorecard. Wu fell behind after a 6-1 loss in the first set before battling in the second canto in hopes of staying alive. Despite his best efforts, Hung-Ju wasn't able to force a third set as he fell 6-4 to end the match.
With this loss, UC's season draws to a conclusion with a record of 23-6. The Patriots put together one of their better campaigns in program history as they matched a last season's mark of six all-conference honorees while garnering their first win over a NCAA Division I opponent their sweep over Austin Peay.
