Mobile, AL - After deafening Mobile yesterday afternoon to advance to the second round of the NAIA National Championship for the third time in the past four years, the Patriots were stifled by Montreat. UC ended up meeting their match in the Cavaliers, losing 4-0.
Doubles play belonged to Montreat with them taking the first two contests to grab their first point of the match. Fan Shiau and Satsuki Mitani were first to see their bout come to an end with the duo playing as UC's #2. They found themselves suffering just their second loss of the season as a tandem by a count of 6-1 to put the Cavaliers ahead. Montreat then secured the first point with a win at the top spot with Stephanie Petit and Carolina Reis defeating Tomomi Nagao and Johanna Beckmann 6-0.
It was more of the same when singles play began with Montreat winning a trio of matchups to bring things to an end. Mikaela Fros was the first Patriot to suffer a loss, playing out of the #5 spot. Fros found herself with a tough assignment on her hands in the form of Nicole Bueno who ended up gaining a 6-0, 6-1 win to move Montreat ahead 2-0.
Fan Shiau was next to see her match come to a conclusion with her playing as the Patriot's #6. Shiau's contest went similarly to that of her teammates Fros' as Fan was defeated 6-2, 6-1. Finishing out the day was Johanna Beckmann who competed out of the #3 spot for Cumberlands. Beckmann tried to fight her way to a win in the first canto but was unable to do so, falling 6-3, before succumbing to her Cavalier counterpart in the second set 6-1 to end the match with Montreat moving on to the quarterfinals.
The bright spot in the match for UC proved to be Meiri Okuwaki. The Mid-South Freshman of the Year put together a strong showing in day one of the tournament in singles and that continued in this one with her able to win her first set. Okuwaki played as UC's #2 and found herself up against Montreat's Valerie Quiceno who currently ranks as the 12th ranked player in the NAIA per the ITA. Despite being up against a tough opponent, Meiri held her own as was able to win her first set 6-3 before the match had been decided.
With this loss, UC's season comes to an end with them holding an overall record of 23-6. The Patriots put together one of their strongest campaigns in program history with them claiming their first Mid-South Conference Championship since 2000 while having four players named to an all-conference team for the most since 2011. Cumberlands proved to be the class of the MSC as they won the Mid-South Player of the Week award seven times for the most in the conference while having the player, freshman, and assistant coach of the year, setting a high bar for the upcoming season.
