Lexington, KY- In their first tournament of the Fall 2022 season, the #17 Patriot men's golf team brings home a first place title with a team score of 571 (-5) Sunday afternoon at the AU Fall Invite. The Patriots had three golfers who claimed first, second and third place in the individual standings.
In his freshman debut,
William Ekeroth tallied a total score of 138 (-6) to earn Medalist honors by three strokes. During the first round of 18, Ekeroth scored a 68 (-4). He recorded two eagles on holes 14 and 18, as well as birdie on hole 5. During round two he carded six birdies, bringing his second round score to 70 (-2). Ekeroth is the first freshman to win the season opener under Head Coach
Aaron Watkins.
Coming in second is
Gustav Barden. The junior came into round two in first place with a score of 66 (-6) after carding a career-high six birdies over the first 18-holes. Barden was able to sink two additional birdies on holes 6 and 18 in round two, bringing his total score to 141 (-3) and securing the runner-up finish.
Five strokes behind the leader was
Hampus Nilsson. Another freshman debut for the Patriots helped earn them their first victory of the year. Nilsson had a combined score of 143 (-1), he was able to improve his first round score of 72 (E) by one stroke in the second round making his score 71 (-1). The freshman carded seven birdies during the invitational and one eagle on hole 14, a 540-yard par 5.
Rounding out the team score for the Patriots was
Jarryd Elliott and
Imanol Camba. Coming into round two tied for ninth, Elliot improved his first round score by one stroke carding a 74 (+2) in the second round. His total score was 149 (+5), earning him an eighth place tie. Camba finished the Invitational tied for 25
th. The graduate student was able to shoot three birdies during the tournament.
Competing as individuals for the Cumberlands was
Jaime Crispi and
Brayden Reed. Crispi finished in 16
th place with a combined score of 152 (+8). Reid improved his day one score by one stroke, bringing his total score to 155 (+11). The freshman carded five birdies during the tournament, three of which came on par 5s.
The Men's Golf team is set to compete again on October 8
th and 9
th at the Links at Kahite Invitational in Vonore, TN.
