Patriots Achieve 13 NAIA Provisional Cuts; Breaks Pair of Pool Records against Buffs

The men's swimming team tallied six wins, achieved 13 NAIA provisional cuts and set a pair of pool records in their dual meet against fourth-ranked Milligan Saturday afternoon. Jokubas Jankauskas and Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira set new pool records as they tallied two individual wins apiece.

The Patriots had four swimmers achieve multiple NAIA provisional cuts in UC's final dual meet of the regular season.  Jankauskas started his day with a win in the 100 back. He touched the wall in 56.09, which set a new pool record, topping the one that was set in 2017.  The freshman followed that with a win in the 200 back as he pulled away from the field to touch the wall in 2:05.31 for his second provisional cut of the day.

Gonzalez de Oliveira dominated the 50 and 100 free events. He earned his first individual win in the 50 free as Gonzalez de Oliveira hit a provisional cut with a time of 23.53 seconds.  In the 100 free, Gonzalez de Oliveira broke the pool record that only stood for a year, as he pulled away from the pack and clocked a 52.13, which was his second provisional cut of the day.
 
Gabriel Eriksson, recorded UC's final individual win of the day as he took top honors in the 200 fly. Eriksson touched the wall in 2:10.72, followed by Trey Wolfram in second with a time of 2:12.07. Both of those times clipped the NAIA provisional cut.

Filip Rybinski and Leon Irmer also garnered a pair of NAIA provisional cuts on the day.  Rybinski went 58.63 to finish runner-up in the 100 back, before clocking a time of 2:10.44 in the 200 back.  Irmer was UC's top finisher in the 100 breast as he touched the wall in 2:26.44 to place third, before going 57.59 in the 100 fly.

Also in the 100 fly, Ruithiik Satti earned a runner-up finishwith a time of 56.67, while Thomas Holzkamm placed fourth with a time of 58.75.  Both of those times were NAIA provisional cuts.  

Peyton Berter achieved Cumberlands final individual cut of the day as he went 2:26.44 in the 200 breast.  
 
In the mid-distance free events, Will Gilbert was the fastest Patriot as he finished third in both the 800 free and the 400 free. In the 800 free, Gilbert hit the wall in 8:59.84 before going 4:22.37 in the 400 free.
 
The Patriots closed out the meet with Irmer, Daniel Ruiz Ramis, Satti, and Gonzalez de Oliveira teamming up to win the 200 free relay.  The quartet of swimmers clocked a time of 1:36.87.

Milligan won the meet 137-125 as Cumberlands finished the year 8-1.

UC will be in Kingsport, TN in two weeks on February 2nd -4th for the MSC Championships.
