Kansas City, MO – Not only did MaQuoia Bernabe earn Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week, but she was announced as the NAIA Wrestler of the week by the national office on Wednesday.

Bernabe has been reliable all season for the Patriots and this past weekend was no different. The Versailles, KY native went 3-0 in the 191-weight class at the Robert Horton Open to take home her first regular season individual title.

Bernabe recorded a fall, tech fall and decision all en route to her championship. Her opening match saw Bernabe win from an 11-0 tech fall where she had her first four-point takedown of the tournament.

Next, the sophomore was able to earn another four-point takedown this time, putting her opponent on her back for the pin at just 58 seconds.

The championship match for Bernabe was no easy feat, having to face Vianne Rouleau, the defending junior Pan-Am gold medalist at 76 kg. But once again Bernabe rose to the occasion hitting her third four-point takedown and getting a push out to score five points. Rouleau also tallied five points, but Bernabe took the win base on criteria.

Bernabe becomes the first Patriot to win NAIA Wrestler of the Week since the 2020-21 season and this marks the first time in her career.

Cumberlands will next go to the Warrior Open in Fort Wayne, IN starting at 9AM ET on Saturday, January 28.
