Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots women's swimming & diving team recorded ten wins and 17 NAIA provisional cuts in their home opener as they defeated Centre 167-124 Friday night at the Patriots Aquatic Center. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 4-0 on the season.
The Patriots opened the meet by taking top honors in the 200 medley relay as
Romina Itzkovich Sacco,
Alicja Sedlak,
Valentina Zapata Ceballos, and
Anastasiia Shatalova teamed up to finish in 1:49.92.
UC had five swimmers tally individual wins including multiple wins for
Valentina Zapata Ceballos,
Alicja Sedlak, and
Michelle Weiss. Zapata Ceballos was dominant in the 100 fly pulling away from the field to clock a 56.61. That time is the best time in the NAIA this season. The sophomore also took first in the 100 back, where she touched the wall in 58.43 which ranks third in the NAIA.
Sedlak posted three individual wins on the day as she went 2:14.38 to win the 200 IM. The freshman led a trio of Patriots to provisional cuts in the 100 breast clocking a time of 1:09.00, while she posted a winning time of 2:28.38 in the 200 breast. Teammates
Ashley Schoenlein (1:10.51) and
Celin Ullern (1:10.94) both achieved provisional cuts in the 100 breast as
Isabella Cooksey's time of 2:34.69 in the 200 breast clipped the national standard.
Weiss continues to be a strong presence in the distance free style events for the Pats. She opened the meet winning the 1000 free with a time of 11:09.47 before taking top honors in the 500 free (5:19.46). The freshman earned her second provisional cut in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.14.
In the 200 back, Itzkovich Sacco and Maddi Barbee posted a one-two finish with both of them achieving the provisional cut. Itzkovich Sacco clocked a 2:09.49, while Barbee went 2:14.27.
Neyali Matos Sanchez sprinted her way to a win in the 50 free with a time of 25.06 as Shatalova clocked a 25.42 to earn runner-up honors. The junior was also runner-up in the 100 free with a time of 55.08.
Judit Garreta Yuste achieved Cumberlands final cut of the meet touching the wall in 2:15.50 for the 200 fly.
UC will return to pool Saturday, November 18, when they host Shawnee State. The meet is slated to begin at 12 p.m. with live video available
