Cumberlands women's tennis team looked dynamic during their spring season opener against the Lincoln Memorial as they earned a 6-1 win, Thursday afternoon. With the win, UC improves to 3-0 on the season.
Doubles play proved to set the tone for the rest of the match as UC won all three doubles matches to record the first point of the match.
Mikaela Fros and
Meiri Okuwaki played as the #1 duo and dispatched of the Railsplitters' Sophia Aray and Amanda Dahlstrom in a convincing way, winning 6-3.
Right after their contest came to an end,
Marina Nagai and
Fan Shiau finished up the #2 spot with them defeating Rosalie Carrier-Dulac and Kushi Khandoji 6-1 to secure the doubles point and the 1-0 lead for the Patriots. Following this, the Pats' #3 duo of
Tessa Gray and
Johanna Beckmann bested Keana Moon and Haley White 6-4 to complete the sweep.
Singles play began about as well as the Patriots could have asked with each of their first four competitors winning in straight sets to seal the victory.
Fan Shiau got things started for UC at the #4 spot in singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Carla Ramonet to extend the lead to 2-0.
Mikaela Fros made it 3-0 after recording a 6-2 win in both the first and second set at #6 singles.
Laura Prieto clinched the win for Cumberlands with a straight set victory at at #2 singles. Prieto notched a 6-2, 6-4 straight set win over Carrier-Dulac extending the lead to 4-0.
UC continued to put in on from there winning two of the final three matchups of the night to garner their first win of the spring season. At #1 singles, Okuwaki controlled the match from the beginning and defeated Aray 6-3, 6-1, making it a 5-0 advantage for UC. Nagai finished out the afternoon with a win at #3 singles over Dahlstrom and moved to 3-0 on the season in singles. After an exchange of points in the first set, Nagai ended up taking it 7-5, before finishing the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. This win over the Railsplitters makes the first win against the NCAA DII rival since 2013.
Cumberlands will look to use the momentum to drive their next matchup as they are set to host Bluefield in their home opener on February 19th at 1:00 pm.
