Cumberlands Gets Four Top Three Finishes At The Cumberland Open

The 20th ranked Patriots ended the Cumberland Open with four top three finishes. The Pats were led by senior Tobias Garrison, who finished first in the 174 bracket.

Garrison's day started with a second period fall in 4:54. Before the fall, Garrison notched five takedowns and a four point near-fall. In his next match, he picked up a 20-3 tech fall win. After a scoreless first period, Garrison notched a fall followed by two four-point near falls. Before the period ended, Garrison notched another takedown to lead 12-2 going into the final period. In that third period, he got two more takedown followed by a four point near fall to end the match. In the semifinal match, Garrison opened the match with a takedown. In the next period, he notched two more takedowns to lead 6-3 going into the final period. Garrison would get an escape followed by a takedown to win the match by a decision, 9-3.  In the first-place match, regular time would not be enough as both wrestlers notched escapes, forcing overtime. In overtime, Garrison notched a takedown in 36 seconds to take the 3-1 sudden victory.

Then in the 133 bracket, Nathan Honhart finished second. In his opening match, Honhart notched a fall in 4:15. Before the fall, he would get a takedown that lead to a four-point near fall and two-point near fall, along with a reversal. In the quarterfinal match, Honhart picked up a takedown in the opening minute and ended the period with two minutes of riding time. He would get two more minutes of ride time in the second period. After choosing bottom to start the third, he would get a reversal to go up 4-1. He won the match in a 5-1 decision. Honhart got his next win from a medical forfeit. In the first place match, he took on Dennis McNeal who is ranked fifth in the 125 weight class. Honhart lost in a 10-3 decision.

Charlie Friedenreich also had a second-place finish in the 165 bracket. Friedenreich only needed 1:09 to get the win by fall. In his next match, he picked up a four-point near fall, a takedown, and three escapes to get the 10-9 decision win. In the semifinal match, Friedenreich picked a 7-0 decision. He opened that match with a takedown right as the first period expired. In the second period, he received two points for penalties. In the final period, he notched an escape and a two point penalty for the win. Friedenreich would suffer a lost in the first-place match.

The final top finisher was Seth Lambers in the 157 bracket. After suffering a loss in his first match, Lambers rebounded with a 7-2 decision win. He got a takedown in each of the first two periods. Then added an escape followed by a takedown in the final seconds to get the win. In his next match, he notched a takedown in the opening period, plus a reversal and ride time point in the final period for the 5-2 decision win. Lambers then picked up a fall victory in 38 seconds to advance. He notched a medical forfeit, followed by a no contest win to finish in third place.

Cumberlands is 7-10 on the season and 4-2 in conference duals. UC will return to the match next Monday, on February 6th to take on Thomas More in their final dual of the season.
