Williamsburg, KY - The
8
th-ranked Cumberlands women's tennis teams improves to 8-1 on the season after a 4-0 win over #19 Indiana Tech, Tuesday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court.
Catherine Rae clinched the match for the Patriots with a win at #5 singles.
Doubles play began with UC in the lead as the number two duo of
Marina Nagai and
Fan Shiau took their match quickly over Valentina Rodriguez and Roshne Arukumar, 6-0. The deciding match was #1 doubles, where
Meiri Okuwaki and
Mikaela Fros grabbed the doubles point with a 6-2 win over the Warriors' top duo, Abigail Simms and Ana Gomez. This gave UC the 1-0 advantage, leaving the #3 doubles match unfinished.
UC began quickly in singles play with them grabbing a trio of wins to give them their fourth sweep of the season. Fros was the first to finish when going solo, making it a 2-0 count in favor of Cumberlands. The Montevideo, Uruguay made easy work of her opponent at #6 singles, Arianna Calcatelli. The graduate student dominated, winning in two 6-1 sets.
Meiri Okuwaki was next to finish playing as UC's top singles player. Okuwaki traded points with Simms, before taking the first set 6-3. In the second stanza, the sophomore was dynamic and did not drop a single point, extending the lead 3-0.
Cumberlands' #5 singles player closed out the match in a straight set win over Valentina Rodriguez. Rae took the first set in a commanding way, winning 6-2. The junior then claimed the second set 6-2 to give UC the 4-0 victory over the Warriors.
Despite three contests going unfinished, there were positives to draw from them as the Patriots found themselves in some tough battles.
Laura Prieto, Nagai and Shiau's matches were all called early. Prieto was playing at the number two singles spot, where she was playing from behind after dropping the first set 6-3. The sophomore was leading the second set 5-3, just one point away from forcing a tie breaker, before the whistle was blown. Nagai played out of the #4 spot against Gomez. The UC sophomore took the first swiftly, as to only drop one point. The second set was a closer race, as Shiau was down 5-4 to Gomez as the match was called. The #3 singles player, Nagai, was also ahead in her match, as she took the first set 6-2. The second was closer, as she and Criss Echavarria were tied at four points a piece, just before the match ended.
With this win, Cumberlands extends their win streak to five and remain undefeated at home. The Pats will now turn their attention to ninth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan, who they are set to face on Thursday, March 16th at 1:00 p.m.
