Cumberlands Women's Tennis Defeat Warriors 6-1

Williamsburg, KY - The eighth-ranked Patriots women's tennis team recorded their eighth straight win, this time a 6-1 victory over Lewis-Clark State Monday afternoon at the UC Tennis Courts.  Cumberlands scored four straight points to open the match and improve their record to 12-1 overall on the season.
 
Tessa Gray and Johanna Beckmann played up one spot today as the #2 duo for UC and were the first to finish in doubles play. After being down 2-0, the tandem rallied to even the score, before Catherine Khardina and Heidi Moyo scored four points to take the match 6-2. UC evened the doubles score with a 7-5 win at #3 doubles as Catherine Rae and Laura Prieto teamed up for the vicotry.

Meiri Okuwaki and Mikaela Fros continued their strong play at #1 doubles as they improved to 9-2 on the season after defeating Yelena Kim and and April Buckingham 7-5 to clinched the first point of the affair.
 
Okuwaki picked up where she left off as UC's top singles player defeating Kim 6-3, 6-3 at to extend the Patriots advantage to 2-0. Laura Prieto followed suit with a win at #2 singles, helping move UC further out in front. Prieto took the first set 6-4, before Lina Boylan flipped the score to force a tie breaker, which the sophomore won 6-4. 
 
With a win at #3 singles, Shiau secured UC's 12th win of the season by giving the Patriots a 4-0 advantage. The Taichung, Taiwan native won the first stanza 6-2, before Beatriz Lambru rallied to take the second 6-4, forcing a decisive third. After an exchange in leads, Shiau and Lambru found themselves tied at 5-5 before the UC sophomore claimed the match by scoring the final two points to take the set 7-5.
 
The Warriors got on the board with a win over Catherine Rae, who played up one spot at #4 singles. Rae took the first set 6-3, before Moyo claimed the second 6-2, forcing a tie-breaker. After an exchange of points, Moyo took the third contest 10-8.
 
UC continued to pour it on from there, winning both of the final matchups of the day to extend their win streak to nine. Mikaela Fros played as the #5 singles, where she controlled the match from the beginning and defeated Catherine Khardina 6-1, 7-5. Beckmann  finished out the day for the Patriots by discarding April Buckingham 6-2, 6-4 to secure the 6-1 final.
 
With this win, Cumberlands moves to 12-1 on the season, and remain undefeated at home. The Patriots will use this win to motivate their busy weekend as they host Shawnee State on Friday, March 31 at 1:00 p.m, before heading to Lebanon, TN to face the Phoenix of Cumberland U on Saturday, April 1st.
