Patriots Men’s Tennis Extends Win Streak to Eight Straight

Williamsburg, KY – The 12th-ranked Patriots men's tennis team recorded their eighth sweep of the season this time tallying a 7-0 win over Georgetown Thursday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court.  With the win, UC improves to 17-3 overall, while remaining unbeaten in conference play.

Cumberlands jumped out in front early after winning sweeping doubles to take a 1-0 lead.  Killian Surmont and Mattis Le Montagner put the Patriots in front with a 6-1 win at #3 doubles.  The duo improves to 2-0 on the season with both matches coming at #3 doubles.  Also teaming up for the second time and earning the win was Billy Chiang Chia Chun and Christian de la Fuente Nodado.  The tandem notched a 6-3 win at #2 doubles to clinch the 1-0 lead for UC.

At #1 doubles Martin Muller and Hung Ju Wu found themselves trailing early against Maxcene Barriere and Parker Clarke.  After the match was tied at 4-4, the Tigers took the next game to jump in front, however, UC's top duo continued to rally.  The match was eventually tied at 6-6 forcing a tie-breaker, which the Patriots won 7-4.

Le Montagner extended Cumberlands lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #1 singles.  It was Le Montagner's eight straight win as he improves to 18-2 on the season.  De le Fuente Nodado followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #3 singles to make it 3-0.

Muller clinched the match for UC with a straight set win at #2 singles.  The senior jumped out to take the first set 6-3, before battling in the second set until the match was tied at 5-5.  Muller won the next two points to clinch the set 7-5 and the match at 4-0.

At #4 singles, Surmont dropped the first set before rallying to win the second set 6-3 and force a third set.  Surmont won the third set 10-6 to extend his win streak to eight straight matches, which is tied for the longest on the team.  Lucas Augotr and Wu closed out the match with a pair of straight set wins at #6 and #5 singles for the 7-0 final.
 
Cumberlands will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 15, as they host Pikeville at 1 p.m.  The Patriots are looking to clinch their first Mid-South Conference title since 2003.  UC will honor their seniors prior to the match.
