Bowling Green, KY – A week after clinching the MSC regular season title, the 12
th-ranked Cumberlands men's tennis team captured their first Mid-South Conference Tournament title in program history with a 4-0 win over #17 and third-seed Lindsey Wilson Sunday afternoon at the Warren County Tennis Complex. The win was the Patriots 12
th straight as they improve to 21-3 on the season and clinch an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship.
The Patriots had to work from behind as Lindsey Wilson recorded a 6-4 win at #1 doubles to take the early advantage. Cumberlands battled back as
Martin Muller and
Hung Ju Wu pulled away from Ilyas Kouchairi and Anatoliy Voloshyn 6-2 at #2 doubles to even the doubles point. The win moves that UC tandem to 15-8 on the season.
At #3 doubles,
Christian de la Fuente Nodado and
Billy Chiang Chia Chung paired up for a 6-3 win to clinch the point and give Cumberlands the 1-0 lead.
De La Fuente Nodado quickly made it 2-0 with a win at #3 singles. The junior won the first set 6-0 and was leading 4-1 in the second set when Voloshyn retired making it 2-0.
Killian Surmont followed at #4 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Santiago Diaz to give the Patriots a 3-0 advantage. Surmont is now 11-1 on the season as he extends his win streak to 11 straight matches.
Mattis Le Montagner, the reigning MSC First-Team All-Conference selection, closed out the match with a straight set win at #2 singles. Le Montagner, who is ranked 21
st in ITA singles, took the first set 6-0 over Firas Ben Chouikha. The two players traded points in the second set, however, the junior won the final two games to win the set 7-5 and clinch the 4-0 sweep for the Patriots.
Wu won the first set at #5 singles and the match was tied at 2-2 in the second set when play was halted. UC dropped the first set at #1 and #6 singles and were tied in the second set when the match was left unfinished.
It was the seventh time in program history that the Patriots have advance to finals of the MSC Tournament and marks the first time that they won both the regular season and tournament titles in the same season.
The win secures the Patriots fourth straight NAIA National Tournament appearance, which is slated to begin on Tuesday, May 16. The NAIA will release the qualifiers and the tournament bracket on Tuesday, May 2.
