Williamsburg, KY - A strong start and a clutch finish propelled the Cumberlands men's tennis team over (RV) Huntington University 5-2 at the UC Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
The Patriots earned the doubles point to gain the early 1-0 advantage, after taking the first two matches.
Martin Muller and
Hung Ju Wu opened the day by earning their fourth straight victory at #1 doubles. The duo defeated Valentin Mussi and Augustin Agosto 6-2.
Billy Chiang Chia Chun and
Killian Surmont followed that up with another 6-2 win over Agusto Fajardo and Mateo Ameller at #2 doubles to secure the doubles point.
Muller and Surmont both continued their successful days with wins in singles.
Muller defeated Valentin Mussi in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 at #1 singles, putting the Pats up 2-0. Surmont earned another victory in straight sets, taking down Andres Jimenez 6-1, 6-4 at #2 singles to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Foresters would take the next two matches at #4 and #3 singles to cut the Patriot lead to one point (3-2).
All eyes were on the final two matches happening next to each other at #5 and #6 singles.
Liam Savio faced off against Agusto Fajardo in a three-set match at #6 singles. The two battled in the first set with Fajardo ultimately taking a 7-6 victory. Savio batled back by responding with a 6-2 win in the second set to even things up. Savio sealed the deal with a solid 6-1 win in the third set to take the win at #6 singles and secure the overall victory for the Pats.
Pierluigi Cruypenninck followed that up with 6-4, 7-6 win over Pablo Lopez Real at #5 singles to cement the 5-2 victory for UC.
Cumberlands returns to the tennis courts on Saturday, March 2
nd for a road matchup against Midway.
