Williamsburg, KY – With the match tied, Patriots senior
MaQuoia Bernabe recorded a fall 56 seconds into her match as the seventh-ranked Cumberlands women's wrestling team earned the 25-20 win over #9 Campbellsville, Wednesday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. It was the Patriots first win over the Tigers since January 5, 2019 as UC improves to 5-1 against the MSC.
Fifth-ranked
Elizabeth Dosado set the tone early for the Patriots against Kiley McNerney. The grad student earned a two-point take down a minute into the first period before tallying a fall at the 1:24 mark to give UC a 5-0 lead.
#11-ranked
Gracie Elliott followed with a fall of her own to extend the lead to 10-0. The freshman earned a four-point takedown in the opening seconds of the match. After resetting, Elliott notched a four-point take down leading to the pin at the 1:34 mark.
Campbellsville cut the lead to 10-5 win a fall at 116 lbs., however, Cumberlands responded a match later. #14
Kaitlin Castro earned a 10-0 tech fall over fourth-ranked Josie Davis to extend the Patriots lead to 14-5. Castro opened with a four-point take down followed by a trio of two-point take downs to close out the match in the first period.
The Tigers won three straight matches to take an 18-14 advantage over UC heading into the 155 lbs. weight class. Senior
Ariana Pereira, who was ranked #19, squared off with seventh-ranked Kendra Thompson. Pereira earned a four-point take down in the first period to take the early advantage. She extended her lead with to 6-0 before Thompson rallied with three points to cut it to 6-3. In the closing seconds of the match Pereira earned a two-point take down for the 8-3 decision as Cumberlands cut the deficit to 17-19.
Senior and 11
th-ranked
Chamira Cooper followed at 170 lbs. Cooper jumped out to a 3-0 lead over #19 Sierra Chavez. Both wrestlers scored a point in the final minute of the first period as the Los Angeles, CA native held a 4-1 lead. Cooper notched a pair of two-point take downs in the second period in the second period to earn the 8-2 decision and tie the match at 20-20.
In the final match of the dual, sixth-ranked Bernabe faced Lexiana Garcia. 45 seconds into the match the Patriots senior recorded a two-point take down and quickly turned it into a fall as Bernabe clinch the dual with the 25-20 final.
Cumberlands will return to the mat Saturday, February 10
th, when they travel to Montreat, NC to face the Cavaliers in a MSC dual.
