UC Opens MSC Play with Dominate Win Over Midway, 38-3

Williamsburg, KY – In their first Mid-South Conference Dual and home opener, the #4 Patriots dominated Midway (5-5, 0-3) by a score of 38-3, taking all the matches but one. Cumberlands moves to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Tristan Bryant, Dylan Preston, and Sherman Dixon led UC with six points in the contest. In the match, UC recorded five decisions, two falls, one technical fall, and one forfeit. 

The Pats got off to a hot start with 125 wrestler Tristan Bryant scoring the first points. The sophomore recorded a 3-point takedown in the first period, and pinned Zach Lewis (Midway) at the 1:46 mark, giving the Patriots a 3-0 lead. 

#7 Adonis Boyd, competing in the 133-bout, helped extend the lead to 11-0 after an impressive 18-0 technical fall victory over Questapha Lewis (Midway). The junior tallied two 4-point nearfalls and a 3-point takedown in the first period. In period two, he recorded another 4-point nearfall and 3-point takedown to take the match.

In the 141-bout, Eli Peyton defeated Anthony Caruso (Midway) in a 4-2 decision, scoring on a 3-point takedown and an escape.

At 149, #17 Ty Lehman defeated Chris Sperin with a 4-2 decision. The junior marked a 3-point takedown in the first and an escape in the third to win the match, giving the Pats a 15-0 lead.

Marc Le Gaspe (157) and Weston Melvin (165) also tallied 4-2 decision wins over their opponents in their respective weight classes. Le Gaspe recorded a 3-point takedown and an escape against Kaleb Clark (Midway), while Melvin collected a 2-point nearfall, escape, and riding time over Abe Hafez (Midway). 

#10 Dylan Preston wrestled and notched a fall of 2:02 against Michael Colligan to give UC six points, helping the Pats lead 29-0. Sherman Dixon was able to tack on six more for the Patriots due to a medical forfeit.

In the 197-weight class, #19 Greyson Stevens won by an 8-3 decision over David Emfinger (Midway). The Brighton, MI native got out to an early 6-0 lead after marking a 4-point nearfall and 2-point reversal in the first period. He would tack on two more points the rest of the way with two escapes. Stevens extended UC's lead to 38-0 and would be the last Patriot to score.

Cumberlands will be back at home on Monday, January 20th to take on Cumberland (Tenn.). The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the UC Volleyball Gym.
