#4 Patriots Shutout Rio Grande on Senior Day

Williamsburg, KY – The #4 UC Men's Wrestling team secured a dominate 55-0 shutout win over the University of Rio Grande on Senior Night and moved to 3-0 in conference play. Cumberlands notched six falls in the match, one major decision, and one decision.

In the 125 and 133-weight classes, #16 Matteo Vargo and #7 Chandlar Akins got the Patriots out to an early 12-0 lead due to forfeits.

In the 141-bout, #8 Gage Hudson extended Cumberlands' lead to 18-0 with the first fall of the night. Hudson scored on a 3-point takedown, 4-point nearfall, and a 2-point reversal before pinning his opponent Phillip Balis (Rio Grande) at the 2:02 mark.

149-wrestler #4 Jace Luchau made his return to the mat for the Patriots and didn't miss a beat. The senior notched a fall of 1:26 against Benjamin Sloan (Rio Grande) after recording a pair of 3-point takedowns.

Derrick Bannister was able to keep the momentum going in the 157-weight class with a fall of his own over Kaylin Foust (Rio Grande) in 2:00. Bannister got the pin after tallying three 3-point takedowns and a 3-point nearfall, extending the UC lead to 30-0.

At 165-lbs, #6 O'Brian Black took the Patriots lead to 33-0 lead with a 5-0 decision against Mitchell Freeman (Rio Grande). The graduate student earned points on a 3-point takedown in the first, followed by an escape and riding time in the third.

In the 174-bout, Dylan Preston notched a fall of 2:49 over Pate Eastin (Rio Grande) to make the score 39-0.

TJ Huber scored four points for UC in the 184-weight class against Ashton Simison (Rio Grande). With four 3-point takedowns, an escape, riding time, and a penalty, Huber won in a 15-2 major decision.

197-wrestler #19 Greyson Stevens defeated Gary Reno (Rio Grande) with a fall of 1:06, giving UC a 49-0 lead. 

#13 Austin Silva would be the last Patriot to score, and he left no doubt, pinning his opponent Michael Peneski (Rio Grande) in a time of 1:31 to secure the shoutout victory for Cumberlands.

UC will travel to Lebanon, TN on Saturday February 1st to compete in the Cumberland Open.
