Box Score 2 Lawrenceville, GA – The 22nd ranked UC Women's Tennis team split a pair of matches at the Georgia Gwinnett Invitational on Saturday. Cumberlands fell to #2 Georgia Gwinnett 4-0, before returning to the court and defeating (RV) Cumberland University.
Cumberlands took on host team #2 Georgia Gwinnett in the first match of the day.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point with wins in the #1 and #3 spots.
Georgia Gwinnett captured the next three singles matches in straight sets to secure the 4-0 victory, while the rest of the games were left unfinished.
In their second match of the day, the Patriots faced (RV) Cumberland University for a non-conference tilt.
UC grabbed the early 1-0 advantage after collecting the doubles point. Liu YuFang and Mahiro Hara defeated Emilia Nowak and Valentina Mendez 6-4 in the #1 spot. Marina Nagai and Rion Yanuma followed with a hard-fought 7-6 victory over Juanita Mendez and Lara Zugasti in #3 doubles.
The Patriots kept rolling with back-to-back impressive victories to extend their lead to 3-0. Karen Kondo led things off in #1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Elina Sungatullina. Marina Nagai also emerged victorious in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 against Ame Van Eijk to give UC a point in the #2 spot.
After the Phoenix picked up their first win in #3 singles, Rion Yanuma earned a win in #6 singles over Zagasti 6-2, 7-6 to secure the 4-1 victory for the Patriots.
Cumberlands will be back in action February 28th for their first home match of the season against Indiana Wesleyan. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET from the UC Tennis Complex.
