Box Score Harrogate, TN – The #23 Patriots Women's Tennis team earned a hard-fought victory over NCAA DII foe Lincoln Memorial. Cumberlands defeated the Railsplitters 4-3 in a back-and-forth contest Thursday afternoon.
UC grabbed the early 1-0 advantage, taking two of three doubles matches. Liu Yufang and Mahiro Hara earned the first victory of the day, defeating Adrianna Pellizzari and Mia Rodriguez 6-0 in #1 doubles. Karen Kondo and Victoria Zarate secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win in #2 doubles over Rosalie Carrier-Dulac and Lucie Palud.
The Patriots got off to a hot start in singles play, winning the first three matches to extend their lead to 4-0. In No. 1 singles, Karen Kondo defeated Adriana Pellizzari in a three-set thriller. Kondo dropped the first set 3-6 before winning the next two 7-5 and 6-2 to get the point.
Marina Nagai added to the lead with a 7-5 and 6-1 win over Marta Melnichenok. Freshman Mahiro Hara followed that up with a three-set victory against Mann-Ning Li in #3 singles. Hara fell in the first set 2-6 but bounced back with wins of 6-0 and 6-4 to secure the win for the Patriots.
Lincoln Memorial would win the next three singles matches but it wouldn't be enough.
The Patriots will remain in Harrogate, TN to take on Southeast Missouri State tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET.
