McKenzie, TN – The #19 UC Women's Tennis team defeated #23 Bethel (Tenn.), 7-0, in an NAIA top-25 matchup on Thursday afternoon. Cumberlands moves to 5-1 in the Mid-South Conference.
The Patriots grabbed an early 1-0 lead, taking two of three doubles matches to secure the point. Karen Kondo and Victoria Zarate earned the first win of the day at #2 doubles against Sofia Canto and Camila Barragan Canas, 7-5. Mahiro Hara and Liu YuFang closed doubles play with a 6-2 victory over Manuela Geraissati and Alejandra Vargas at the #3 spot.
Karen Kondo kept the momentum rolling into singles play, giving UC a 2-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Sofia Canto at #1 singles.
Marina Nagai extended the UC lead to 3-0, emerging victorious at #2 singles against Camila Barragan Canas in straight-sets 6-0, 6-2.
At #3 singles, Rion Yanuma clinched the overall team win with a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set victory over Alejandra Vargas.
Liu YuFang earned her second point of the match, defeating Martina Coghetto 6-4, 6-3 at the #4 spot to make the score 5-0.
Mahiro Hara picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tessa Mtutu at #5 singles, while Victoria Zarate cemented the shutout win with a victory over Manuela Geraissati at the #6 spot.
Cumberlands wraps up the regular season on Saturday April 19th at Midway. The match is set to begin at noon ET.
