Georgetown, KY - The Patriots women's tennis team showcased depth and determination at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, highlighted by multiple semifinal appearances in doubles and strong runs in singles play.
The Patriots had two pairs reach the semifinals of the doubles draw. The No. 4-seeded team of Nagai and Kojima advanced with wins over Indiana Southeast and Milligan before falling to Lindsey Wilson's Gisone and Cortal in the semifinals. Meanwhile, the third-seeded duo of Liu and Zarate picked up wins over Bethel and Johnson pairings to reach the semifinals, where they dropped a close match to Rodriguez and Ortega Mateu of Lindsey Wilson.
The fifth-seeded pair of Eva Cancarevic and Hara fell in their opening match after a Round of 32 bye, while the tandem of Puckaporn Jirachavala and Wansai Kasikampaiboon earned a first-round win before bowing out in the Round of 16.
Fourth-seeded Marina Nagai led the Patriots with a trip to the singles quarterfinals. She rolled through her opening matches, defeating Indiana Southeast's Eva Ellis, Cumberland's Asya Tilsim Timur, and Milligan's Lee Anne Endler in straight sets. Her run came to a close in a three-set battle with Lindsey Wilson's Hang Nguyen, falling 3-6, 6-1, 7-10.
Mahiro Hara, seeded ninth, advanced to the Round of 16 after two commanding wins before bowing out to Campbellsville's Belen Cavallero. Freshman Bryndis Rosa also notched a first-round sweep before facing Cavallero in the Round of 32.
Ninth-seeded Victoria Zarate picked up back-to-back wins over Johnson's Caroline Rhoton and Campbellsville's Andrea Pulido before falling in the Round of 16. Seventh-seeded Haruna Kojima advanced to the Round of 16 as well, winning her first two matches before being edged in a third-set tiebreak by Lindsey Wilson's Martina Cortal.
Yu Fang Liu also reached the Round of 16, earning a first-round victory and moving through the second round via opponent injury before falling to Lindsey Wilson's Maria Ange Ortega Mateu. Rion Yanuma battled hard in her opening match but fell in a super tiebreak to Milligan's Endler.
The Patriots will be back in action for the UC Invite 2 on Saturday, October 4 at the UC Tennis Complex.
