Cedar Falls, IA – The No. 10 Patriots Women's Wrestling team collected a ninth-place finish after posting a 3-2 record at the NWCA National Duals. UC was seen besting #13 Ottawa and #8 Doane on day two of the duals.
#10 CUMBERLANDS BESTS #13 OTTAWA, 28-18
Cumberlands opened day two of the NWCA National Duals with a 28-18 victory over #13 Ottawa University, winning seven of the ten bouts to secure the dual.
Ottawa struck first in the 103-weight class, as Aynsley Fink defeated Dutchess King by fall at 5:40 to give the Braves an early advantage. The Patriots quickly answered back at 110, with Kaylin Taylor evening the score by earning a fall over Sydnee Baldwin at the 5:27 mark.
UC continued to build momentum in the 117 bout, where Shammilka Miranda picked up a 6-1 decision over #18 Addison Saporito. The Patriots extended their lead at 124 after Kaitlin Castro picked up a forfeit, followed by a dominant 10-0 tech fall from Mary Jane Porter in the 131-weight class against Kaydence Bonewell.
Ruth Jimenez added to the Patriots' advantage at 138, edging #11 Aileen Lester by a narrow 3-2 decision. Genesis Gilmore then delivered a key bonus-point victory at 145, securing a fall in just 2:27 over #19 Kaitlyn Thorn to push the lead further in favor of Cumberlands.
Micah Miller sealed the dual in the 160 bout with a hard-fought 5-4 decision over returning national finalist Darby Weidl. Ottawa closed the match with points from a forfeit at 180 and a fall at 207, but the Patriots had already secured the 28-18 final.
#10 CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS #8 DOANE, 33-12
The Patriots continued their momentum on day two of the NWCA National Duals with an impressive 33-12 victory over #8 Doane, earning eight wins in the lineup and collecting multiple bonus-point performances.
Cumberlands set the tone early in the 103-weight class, as Angelina Casteneda needed just 1:16 to secure a fall over #20 Kimberly Navarette. The Patriots doubled their lead at 110, with Sarina Gunn picking up another fall at 2:32 against Isabela Gutierrez.
Shammilka Miranda stayed sharp at 117, earning a 4-2 decision over #13 Angelica Vicente Gonzalez to keep the Patriots rolling. Doane answered at 124, as Cristelle Rodriguez defeated Sophia Satterfield by tech fall, but UC quickly regained control in the 131 bout with Mary Jane Porter posting a 4-0 decision over #13 Ashlee Palimo.
The Patriots picked up more bonus points at 138, where Oriyana Castex delivered a fall at the 2:34 mark against Sienna Long. Genesis Gilmore followed at 145 with an 8-3 decision over #10 Bridgette Sotomayor to extend the advantage.
UC added to the lead in dominant fashion at 160, as Sierra Mefford recorded a fall in just 52 seconds over Avani Wilkie. After a forfeit at 180 in favor of Doane, Naomi Duenas closed the dual strong for the Patriots, earning a 13-6 decision over Hailey Romero in the 207-weight class to secure the 33-12 final.
UC returns home for a Senior Day matchup against #1 Life University on Saturday, January 17.
