Cedar Falls, IA – The No. 10 Patriots Women's Wrestling team competed in the first day of the NWCA National Duals where they faced three different opponents. The squad went 1-2 and will advance to the second day of duals.
#10 CUMBERLANDS FALL SHORT TO #3 GRAND VIEW, 20-27
UC opened the match with setbacks in the 103 and 110, as Dutchess King and Kaylin Taylor were defeated by fall and tech fall, respectively.
UC responded in the 117-weight class with Shammilka Miranda earning a fall in 5:06 over #4 Cailin Campbell. After a loss in the 124 bout, Mary Jane Porter picked up a 9-6 decision in the 131 bout, followed by a 14-3 tech fall from Ruth Jimenez in the138-weight class. Genesis Gilmore continued the momentum with a 10-2 decision in the 145-weight class.
After Grand View reclaimed points in the 160 bout, Saiheron Preciado-Meza delivered a key fall in 3:53 in the 180 bout to keep the Patriots within striking distance. Grand View closed the dual with a fall in the 207 bout to secure the 27-20 final.
#10 CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS #12 OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY, 28-18
In their second dual of the day, UC bounced back with a 28-18 victory over Oklahoma City University. The Patriots opened the match strong in the 103, as Dutchess King secured a fall in 2:05 over Sofia Abramson.
Oklahoma City responded in the 110 bout, but UC quickly answered in the 117 with Shammilka Miranda earning a win by forfeit. After a setback in the 124-weight class and an injury default in the 131, Ruth Jimenez swung the momentum back in favor of the Patriots with a 13-2 tech fall in the 138 bout.
UC continued to build separation in the middle weights, as Alivia Ming recorded a fall in 5:24 in the 145-weight class, followed by an 11-0 tech fall from Micah Fisher-Miller in the 160. Saiheron Preciado-Meza added another tech fall in the 180 bout with a 10-0 victory to solidify the lead.
Oklahoma City closed the dual with a fall in the 207, but Cumberlands had already secured the 28-18 final.
#10 CUMBERLANDS DEFEATED BY #5 LINDSEY WILSON UNIVERSITY, 9-39
In their final dual on the first day of the NWCA National Duals, Cumberlands faced Lindsey Wilson University. Lindsey Wilson opened the match with consecutive falls in the 103 and 110, followed by a 12-8 decision in the 117 to build early momentum.
The Blue Raiders continued to add points through the middle of the lineup with falls in the 124, 131, 138, and 145. UC was able to get on the board in the 160, as Sierra Mefford recorded an 11-1 tech fall over Ta`jai Broadnex.
After a forfeit in the 180 in favor of Lindsey Wilson, Chamira Cooper closed the dual on a positive note for the Patriots, earning a 10-0 tech fall in the 207 bout. Lindsey Wilson secured the 39-9 final.
UC will return to the mats tomorrow Saturday, January 10, for day two of the NWCA National Duals. The Patriots will face #13 Ottawa University at 9:00 a.m. (CT) in Cedar Falls, IA.
