Clemson, SC – The eighth-ranked Patriots men's tennis team split its pair of matches at the Grizzly Invitational on Saturday, falling 4-0 to No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett in the morning before bouncing back with a strong 5-1 victory over Montreat in the afternoon. The Patriots move to 5-3 on the season following the split.
Match 1: PATRIOTS FALL TO NO. 2 GEORGIA GWINNETT
Cumberlands faced a tough test to open the day against second-ranked Georgia Gwinnett, as the Grizzlies claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
The duo of Darius Kuster and Gabriele Solda fell 6-2 at the top doubles position, while Jacopo Cianfarini and Mohammed Abuzed Saber dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match featuring Kesia Roi and Manuel Fernandez Guede was left unfinished with the teams tied.
Georgia Gwinnett carried its momentum into singles play, securing straight-set victories at multiple positions. At No. 1 singles, Kuster battled against one of the nation's top players before falling 6-2, 6-4. Solda also faced a strong opponent at No. 3 singles, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision.
The match was clinched at No. 5 singles, where Roi fell in a competitive contest, 7-5, 6-2, sealing the 4-0 win for the Grizzlies.
Match 2: CUMBERLANDS BOUNCES BACK WITH 5-1 WIN OVER MONTREAT
The Patriots responded in dominant fashion in their afternoon match, securing the doubles point and winning five singles matches to defeat Montreat 5-1.
Cumberlands controlled doubles play from the start. Kuster and Solda earned a convincing 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Cianfarini and Abuzed Saber followed with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles to secure the early advantage.
In singles competition, Cumberlands continued to roll. Cianfarini delivered a dominant performance at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0. Solda followed with a strong showing at No. 2 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Roi added another point for the Patriots with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, while Sampras Rakotondrainibe secured a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
Despite dropping the No. 3 singles match, the Patriots maintained control throughout the lineup. Abuzed Saber was also in position to earn a win at No. 5 singles before the match was halted after the team result had been decided.
UC will be back on the courts for their home opener on Wednesday, February 25, against Marian (Ind.). The match is slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
