Harrogate, TN – The No. 15 University of the Cumberlands women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 5–2 victory over Carson-Newman Saturday afternoon at the LMU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Patriots opened the match by sweeping doubles to take an early 1–0 lead. Haruna Kojima and Marina Nagai set the tone with a 6–4 win at No. 1 doubles, followed by Bryndis Rosa and Mahiro Hara's 6–3 victory at No. 2.
Carson-Newman responded with wins at the top two singles spots, but Cumberlands answered back with four singles victories to secure the team win. Bryndis Rosa delivered a clutch three-set victory at No. 3 singles, rallying past Abinaya Sweeton 4–6, 6–3, 10–3. Mahiro Hara followed with a marathon match at No. 4, edging Katarina DiNova 0–6, 6–2, 14–12.
YuFang Liu added another point for the Patriots with a straight-set win at No. 5, 7–5, 6–3, while Eva Cancarevic sealed the victory at No. 6, battling past Andrea Aguiar 7–6, 6–3.
UC will be back on the courts on February 21, where they will travel to Lawrenceville, GA to compete in the Grizzly Invitational. Their first match is scheduled for 9:00 AM against SCAD Savannah.
