HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of the Cumberlands women's cross country team faced one of its toughest fields of the season Friday at the Southern Showcase, placing 28th out of 31 teams in the Women's 5K Invite with 743 points. The race featured a heavy NCAA Division I presence, while the Patriots finished second among the NAIA programs in the field.

Returning All-American Lea Kunstmann led Cumberlands through the crowded field, crossing the line in 18:43.4. The sophomore placed 131st overall and accounted for 119 points in the team scoring.

Freshman Jule Krauss continued her strong start to the season as UC's second finisher. Krauss clocked a 19:05.0, following up her ninth-place performance at the season-opening IWU Twilight Invitational.

The Patriots packed their next two runners together as Heather Durrant and Elisa Helferich crossed just three-tenths of a second apart. Durrant finished in 19:20.2 before Helferich followed at 19:20.5, giving UC four finishers within 38 seconds.

Brianna Hillock completed the scoring five with a 19:47.7 performance. The freshman helped Cumberlands post a top-five average of 19:16, with 1:05 separating Kunstmann and Hillock.

UC continued to find depth immediately behind its scorers. Megan Kitchens ran 19:51.5, while fellow freshman Christie George followed in 19:54.9 to give the Patriots seven runners under 20 minutes. Tigist Bergman (20:07.0), Anslee Crosby (20:11.1), and Rylee Schaffner (20:22.3) were next across the line.

Emma Quillen recorded a 20:51.9, followed by Molly Beckham (21:09.9), Lucy Sullivan (21:18.1), Bella Rechtin (22:30.3), and Courtney George (22:46.1) to round out the Patriot contingent.

Cumberlands was one of just two NAIA programs in the 31-team field to finish inside the top 28, trailing only second-ranked Milligan among NAIA competition. UC finished 11 points behind 27th-place West Florida and 10 points ahead of NCAA Division I Evansville.

The Patriots return to competition on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, for The Great Louisville Classic.
