Cumberlands Strategic Plan for the Education and Prevention of MRSA

Education
  • Brief presentation of skin infections as the "why, how, and care" as well as prevention practices for every sport team.
  • Prevention Guidelines posted in the athletic training facility and every locker room as well as pictures of Bacterial Staph Aureus or MRSA infections.
  • Skin Infection update for all coaches regarding skin infections with expectations on communication toward compliance for athletes toward proper hygiene and triage on suspicious skin lesions.
Prevention
  • Require hygiene to include showering after each practice with antibacterial soap.
  • Communicate avoidance toward sharing of towels, athletic gear, and disposable razors.
  • Require all athletes report and seek attention for all abrasions, cuts, skin lesions to athletic trainers for proper cleansing, treatment, and wound dressing.
  • Provide skin exams when necessary for team members previous to practice.
  • Facility cleaning daily with hospital based spectrum disinfectant on both horizontal and vertical surfaces including the locker room, shower, bathroom, weight room, and athletic training.
  • Laundry cleaning daily of athletic gear (undergarment and outerwear) daily to include an antibacterial agent programmed in the wash and or rinse cycle.
Care
  • Non-toxic antimicrobial cleanser products available in the athletic training facility for athletes to freely utilize.
  • Wound Care instructions visibly posted for athletes and staff to use.
  • Require all wounds must be treated and covered with a dressing before practice.
  • Dispose of all dressings, bandages, or wraps in biohazard container.
Updates
  • Document referral to physician having culture performed.
  • Review policy and protocols annually with medical staff and AD.
  • Review recent trends in literature on prevention and care in wound management for planning.
