University of the Cumberlands Athletics

Barbourville, KY- The University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team dropped its final nonconference game to Union 2-0 Tuesday night at Williamson Stadium. With the loss the Patriots fall to 6-4-3 and the Bulldogs improve to 7-5-1.
 
Union forced the Patriots into a defensive stance early in the first half as the Bulldogs recorded the first eight shots and three corner kicks of the contest. Ahmed Ghatwary made three saves in the opening 30' minutes to keep the scoreless. Joel Drewery fired Cumberlands only shot on goal in the 32' minute, but Union's goalie Filipe Barateiro was there to get the save keeping the game tied 0-0. The score remained that way until the 44' minute as the Bulldogs' Edwin Garcia netted an unassisted goal to put Union up 1-0 at halftime.
 
Union continued to control the ball in the second half as they out shot the Patriots 11-1.  Ghatwary recorded three saves in the first ten minutes of the second half, including one coming right away in the 47' minute, to keep the score 1-0. The Patriots were looking for the equalizer in the 58' minute from Joel Caldwell, but his shot sailed wide. Shortly after entering the game, Ivan Martin recorded his first collegiate save in the 69' minute to keep UC within one.  The Bulldogs got an insurance goal in the 79' minute as Garcia connected with Ryan Coleman, who headed the ball into the goal for the 2-0 win.
 
Cumberlands will return home on Saturday, October 14, as they return to Mid-South Conference play at the UC Soccer Complex. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. live video is available here, while live stats are available here.
