Williamsburg, KY – Despite the battle by UC Volleyball in the first set, the Patriots suffered a three set loss (25-20, 25-14, 25-12) to the Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College Wednesday night in the UC Volleyball Gym. The Blue Raiders remain perfect on the year with a 20-0 overall record and 9-0 in the MSC as the Patriots fall to 11-9 on the year and 4-5 in the MSC.
In the first set, UC came out strong with a 4-2 lead then the Blue Raiders bounced back to tie the set at 5-5. The Patriots recaptured the lead 7-5, however Lindsey Wilson put up a rally to steal the lead at 9-8. Cumberlands would take the lead back with two points and the Blue Raiders scored two of their own to retake the lead at 11-10. From there, UC scored three straight for a 13-11 lead and held on until Lindsey Wilson went on a 6-0 to take an 18-14 lead. The Patriots scored the next five of seven points to shorten the deficit to 20-19, before the Blue Raiders increased the lead to 23-19. After the Patriots scored the next point, Lindsey Wilson took the final two points for a 25-20 first set win.
The Blue Raiders opened up the second set with eight straight points for a quick 8-0 lead and continued to increase the lead to 12-2. UC mustered a rallied to shorten the lead to 14-7, although Lindsey Wilson continued to dominate with a 19-8 lead. Cumberlands managed to bring the lead down to 19-10, however the Blue Raiders scored the next three for a 21-10 lead. Two more points for UC shortened the deficit to ten, but Lindsey Wilson scored the next three of five points to win the second set 25-14.
Just like before, Lindsey Wilson put up a quick deficit in the third set for a 4-0 lead and persisted to extend the lead to 10-2. The Patriots then shortened the lead to 12-5, however the Blue Raiders kept pushing away for a 14-5 lead. UC scored five of six points to shrink the lead to 15-10, before Lindsey Lindsey Wilson took the next nine of 10 for a 24-11 lead. Cumberlands stole the next point, however the Blue Raiders took the point after for a 25-12 set and match win.
Mackenzie Koch had seven kills while
Jessica Severs and
Madeleine Lee each gathered five kills in the match.
Lynsey Short recorded 20 assists and two aces, while Severs also contributed two aces of her own.
Tara Routliffe had 17 digs as Severs chipped in 13 digs. Koch totaled three assisted blocks with Severs earning two assisted and a solo.
The Patriots will travel to Grand Rapids, MI, to compete in the first day of the Cornerstone/Aquinas Classic on Friday, October 13. First up, UC takes on Aquinas College at 5 p.m. followed by an 8 p.m. match against Siena Heights University. Live video and stats will be available for the Aquinas match
