Marietta, GA – UC Volleyball earned their fifth MSC win over the Running Eagles of Life University on Saturday. The Patriots won the match by scores of 25-15, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19. After the win, Cumberlands improves to 13-15 overall and 5-7 in conference while Life goes to 17-11 on the year and 5-7 in the MSC.
The first set started with the Patriots jumping ahead 4-2 then increasing the lead to 8-3. Life stayed in through 11-7, however Cumberlands earned five straight for the 16-7 lead. The Running Eagles scored two just before UC took three to go up 19-9. The Patriots won the next three of five points for the 22-11 lead, Life followed up with a four point rally to shrink the deficit to 22-15. UC then won the final three points to win the first set 25-15.
Life jumped ahead early in the second set, but the Patriots pieced together four straight to take an 8-6 lead. This lead stuck until the Eagles had their own streak of four to steal the lead at 11-10. UC tied it up at 11-11, however Life regained the lead 14-11. Cumberlands continued to battle for the lead though Life wouldn't back down and won the second set 25-21.
In the third set, Life took two before UC stole seven in a row for the 7-2 lead. The Eagles managed to slightly close the gap to 12-8 then continued to come within three at 17-14. Cumberlands stayed in control to go ahead 21-17. From there, each team traded points until the Patriots took the 25-20 third set win.
The lead went back-and-forth in the fourth set with UC taking charge at 12-9. Life scored five straight points to steal the lead 14-12. Cumberlands again took over at 15-14 then the battle continued until UC went up 18-16. Life took a point then the Patriots took three, this repeated until Cumberlands had the 24-18 lead. After the Eagles scored another point, UC scored the final point to win the match and set 25-19.
Jessica Severs picked up another double-double with 16 digs and 15 kills.
Mackenzie Koch chipped in 14 kills as
Megan Willoughby notched nine of her own.
Jennifer Stein and
Tara Routliffe each gathered three aces in the match. Routliffe tallied 36 digs in the match, Willoughby totaled 14.
Lynsey Short recorded 42 assists.
Abbie Genders had four assisted blocks while Severs earned two assisted blocks and a solo block.
The Patriots will head to Pikeville, KY, for a MSC match against University of Pikeville on Tuesday, October 31. First serve is set for 7 PM.
