Williamsburg, KY – UC Volleyball notched another MSC win on Tuesday this time over the Bears of Shawnee State University. The Patriots took the win in three straight sets by scores of 25-15, 27-25, 25-16 for their ninth sweep of the season. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the MSC, while Shawnee drops down to 6-12 on the year and 1-5 in conference.
The first set started as a back-and-forth battle for the lead. With the match tied at 6-6, UC earned two points to go ahead 8-6. The Bears brought the score within one but four consecutive points for Cumberlands moved the lead to 12-5. From there, the Patriots continued to push away from Shawnee to hold a 21-12 lead. UC continued on to win the first set 25-15.
In the second set, Shawnee jumped ahead early to a 4-1 lead. The Patriots shortened the lead, before the Bears rallied for six straight points to extend their lead to 11-3. UC responded by tallying seven of the next eight points to shrink Shawnee's lead to 12-10. The Patriots continued to chip away at the lead and managed to tie the match up at 16-16 then followed up by stealing the lead at 19-17. After exchanging a point each, Shawnee rallied for three to retake the lead 21-20. UC scored the next three of four to take back the lead 23-22. Just like before, the Bears recaptured the lead 24-23 prior to Cumberlands forcing another tie. Shawnee earned the go-ahead point to go up 25-24, before UC took charge and scored three straight to win the second set 27-25.
The Patriots took the lead first in the third set 4-1 and move ahead for a seven point lead at 11-4. UC continued to push away to 14-6, then the Bears managed to bring the score closer at 15-11. Cumberlands continued to control the set and went up 20-14. The Bears weren't able to come back from the deficit as the Patriots won the final five of seven points for the match and set win 25-16.
Several Patriots record career highs on Tuesday night led by
Jessica Severs, who earned career-highs in kills (15), points, (19), and total blocks (4).
Lynsey Short tallied a career-high in assists at 44, while
Tara Routliffe earned 28 digs for her career-high. Short also earned a double-double in the match with digs (11) and assists.
Mackenzie Koch chipped in 12 kills and four blocks (two assisted and two solo) of her own in the win.
Megan Jackson also tallied four blocks (two assisted and two solo). Short and Jen Stein each earned two aces in the match.
The Patriots will be back on the court on Saturday, October 7, for a MSC matchup against the Bears of University of Pikeville. First serve is set for 2 p.m. and live video of that match is available
