Strong Second Half Leads Patriots to 77-70 Victory

Williamsburg, KYChance Morton recorded 22 points and nine rebounds in the second half to lead the UC Men's Basketball Team to a 77-70 win over Indiana University Southeast, who is ranked 19th in NAIA Division II, Tuesday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.  With the win the Patriots improve to 2-0, while the Grenadiers fall to 1-1.

IU Southeast made the first bucket of the game, before Taylor Gover found Morton for a three-pointer to give UC a 3-2 just over two minutes into the first half.  That would be UC's only lead of the half as the Grenadiers used a 10-4 run, over a four-minute span, to take a 6-12 lead.  Cumberlands was able to cut the deficit to one as Anthony Eaves drained a shot from long-range with 11:55 remaining.  Less than a minute later, Bernard Samuel converted a three-point play to tie the game at 16-16.  IU Southeast responded with six unanswered points, before Will Gary found Eaves for the trey.  The Grenadiers went on a 10-7 run to extend their lead to 35-29 with 1:15 left.  Samuel hit a three-pointer in the final minute to cut the deficit to 35-32 at halftime.

Cumberlands came out strong in the second half, scoring the first seven points, including five from Morton to take a 39-35 lead just over two minutes in.  IU Southeast tied the game, before the Patriots hit three straight field goals to take a 45-39 lead with 15 minutes remaining.  The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes before Morton and Samuel hit back-to-back triples to give UC its largest lead of the game 60-46 midway through the second half.  After the Grenadiers cut the lead to six points, Morton grabbed one of his three offensive rebounds and put it back for the bucket to give the Patriots a 64-56 advantage.  Cumberlands went on a 9-7 run, which included threes from Eric Duncan and Samuel to take a 73-65 lead with 1:39 remaining.  Jordan Knoebel three-pointer for IU Southeast cut the lead to five before UC connected with four free throws for the 77-70 final.

Morton led the way for the Patriots with 25 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.  Eaves added 18 points, while Samuel finished with 13 points and five assists. Gary dished out a team-high six assists, which is a new career-high.
