Bowling Green, KY – The University of the Cumberlands men's soccer season ended on Thursday afternoon as they loss to fifth-seeded Life University 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament being held at Warren Central High School. With the loss the Patriots end their season with an overall record of 8-7-3 overall.
The Running Eagles (9-8) had momentum for most of the first half with
Ahmed Ghatwary and the Patriot backline keeping Life off the board for the first ten minutes. In the 11' minute Thierry Jules crossed it low in front of the goal to Wessley Soronellas was able to net it in at close range to put the Running Eagles up 1-0. The Patriots had several opportunities to even the score over the next 20 minutes as they tallied three shots and two cornerkicks.
Joel Caldwell's shot in the 26' minute hit the crossbar and
Nicklas Nancke put a shot on frame in the 28' minute but Daryoush Hosseini saved it. The UC backline limited the Running Eagles to one shot, which was blocked, over the final 15 minutes of the first half to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.
The Patriots came out in the second half looking for the equalizer as
Aleksa Blagojevic fired a shot in the 53 minute, but it would go wide. Minutes later Life looked to extend their lead however the Cumberlands defense blocked two shots, while Ghatwary recorded a save to keep it a one goal game with 34 minutes remaining. Life outshot the Patriots 7-1 over the final 30 minutes of action but neither team was able to convert as the game ended with a 1-0 final.
Ghatwary led Cumberlands with three saves, while Blagojevic tallied a team-high three shots.
Life advances to the semifinals of the MSC Tournament and will face top-seed Lindsey Wilson next Thursday.
