Williamsburg, KY – The UC Women's Soccer team couldn't overcome an early goal as the Patriots fell to fourth-seed Campbellsville 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference tournament Friday afternoon at Warren Central High School. With the win the Tigers improve to 7-10-1 and advance to the semifinals, while the Patriots concludes its season with 7-10-1.
Just over a minute into the game Rachel McWilliams sent a cross to Rachel Blumfeldt who netted a goal to give Campbellsville a 1-0 lead. The Patriots looked to even the score as they recorded four shots and a corner kick over the next ten minutes but were unable to convert. The Tigers looked to extend their lead in the 13' minute but
Rachel Palazzo blocked a Kiersten Clukey shot to keep the score 1-0. The two teams traded possession over the course of the next 15 minutes with Campbellsville tallying three shots, only one of which was on target and saved by
Christie Funk. Cumberlands best opportunity came in the 30' minute as
Jody LeMaster fired a shot towards the goal but Amanda Howard made the save to keep the score 1-0 at the break.
Campbellsville looked for an insurance goal to start the second half as the tallied two shots, one of which was saved by Funk, in the first three minutes of the half. Minutes later,
Emily Willoughby got behind the Tigers backline and put a shot on frame but was unable to connect. The two teams continued to battle with neither team able to put a shot on goal until the 63' minute when the Tigers' Jordan Stallings connected with a shot but Funk made the save to keep it a one goal game. Campbellsville recorded two more shots, before the Patriots pushed the ball forward looking for the equalizer. Willoughby and LeMaster each put a fired a shot towards the goal but couldn't convert with five minutes remaining. With just over a minute left
Alexis Kingsley sent the ball towards the goal, however Howard was there for the save to secure the 1-0 final.
Funk made four saves in the game, two in each half, while LeMaster recorded a team-high five shots.
Campbellsville advances to the semifinals where they will take on top-seed Cumberland, who defeated Pikeville 7-0, next week.
