Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Bo Kidd

Strong First Half Aids in UC’s Win over Bluefield

Pikeville, KY – After a season opening loss on Friday night, the Patriot Women's Basketball team bounced back with a vengeance, opening up a great lead in the first half and never looking back as they defeated the Rams of Bluefield College in the 2017 APW Classic 66-38. The win improves the Patriots to 1-1 overall on the year.

After trading baskets early to open the contest with a 5-5 score, UC would go on the attack. The Patriots would go on a 14-5 run over a six minute span with five different ladies scoring to open up a 19-10 lead. Bluefield would add a late basket to make it 19-12 at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, UC jumped out of the gate in a sprint. Solid shooting and great defense would lead to a 17-4 run to start the quarter, aided by seven points from Cheyenne Madden and a pair of threes from Alani Fisher to give UC a 20 point lead at 36-16. The two squads would trade points the remainder of the half, sending the Patriots to the locker room up 40-20.

In the third, neither team could really get their offense rolling, but UC would be able to extend their lead. Five of the Patriots' nine points in the quarter came off free throws as Madison Meier scored five total points in the frame as UC carried a 49-28 lead into the fourth. UC would get two more treys from Fisher in the quarter as the Patriots opened up their largest lead of the contest at 28. Cumberlands would cruise from there for the 66-38 win over the Rams.

Madden led all scorers with 21 points and seven rebounds while Fisher scored 12, all from behind the arc, with three rebounds and two assists. Callia Cropp and Madison Meier each added 10 points in the victory. The Patriots shot just under 44% from the field while holding Bluefield to under 29% in the contest. UC nearly doubled over the Rams on the boards, outrebounding Bluefield 50-26 in the win.

UC opens up their home schedule on Tuesday, November 7th as they host the Eagles of Midway University for a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is slated for 6 pm. You can follow along live with stats here and live video here as Brandon Hensley and Tommy Chasanoff will have the call.
