Box Score 2 Columbia, KY – UC volleyball had a strong showing on Saturday at the Lindsey Wilson Classic as they swept the competition in both of their matches. The first match was a 3-0 win over the Grenadiers of Indiana University Southeast with the second being a 3-0 win over the Racers of University of Northwestern Ohio. The pair of wins improves the Patriots' record to 2-2 on the year.
The Patriots overcame the IU Southeast in the first match with three straight set wins, 25-11, 31-29, 25-20. The Grenadiers took a 4-0 lead to start the first set, but the Patriots worked their way in to shorten the Grenadiers' lead to 7-4. The Patriots would string together 12 straight points to take over the lead at 16-7. IU Southeast would be unable to recover as UC continued to dominate and take the first set win 25-11.
The second set was a battle for both teams as the lead was exchanged several times. The Grenadiers jumped ahead early again with a 4-1 lead, but UC answered back with six straight points to take the lead at 7-4. IU Southeast would have their own streak with seven points to take back the lead at 12-8. After some back-and-forth, the Grenadiers would hold their largest lead of the set at 18-13. The Patriots would even the score at 21-21, but the Grenadiers would again jump ahead to hold the lead at 22-21. UC would bounce back to take retake the lead at 23-22. IU Southeast would take the next two points to hold the lead at 24-23, but Cumberlands again fought back to take the lead at 25-24. The score would continue to be a two point exchange with each team holding the lead until UC was again to overcome the Grenadiers for three straight points to win the set 31-29.
In the third set, IU Southeast followed the same trend as the earlier sets by getting ahead early with a 4-1 lead. Just like before UC went on a six point run to take over the lead at 7-4. The Grenadiers responded with a four point run to take back the lead at 8-7. The Patriots recovered the lead at 10-8, before IU Southeast tied it back up at 12-12. UC would space out the score with a three point run to hold the lead at 15-12. Four straight points for the Grenadiers would give them the lead at 16-15, again the Patriots would steal the lead back at 17-16. IU Southeast again took over the lead at 19-17, before six straight points for UC put the Patriots ahead 23-19. The Grenadiers wouldn't be able to come back from the rally as UC continued on to win the set and match 25-20.
Offensively, the Patriots were led by
Mackenzie Koch with 13 kills while
Megan Jackson had 11 of her own.
Tara Routliffe tallied 18 digs in the match as Jen Stein gathered 14.
Jessica Severs led in blocks with two, Koch and Jackson each chipped in one each.
Lynsey Short had an impressive 41 assists and two aces in the match.
The second match for UC was another three set sweep over UNOH, 25-15, 25-21, 25-20. The first set looked to be in the Racers' favor as they took the first point, but things quickly changed as UC moved ahead 6-4 and didn't look back. The Patriots would continue to pound with a set high lead of 11 points at 24-13. UNOH would gather two points, but UC would cap off the set with a final point and win set one 25-15.
In the second set, the Racers jumped ahead to take a 4-0 lead. Five straight points for UC would put them back on top 5-4. The set would be tied twice, before the Patriots retook the lead at 9-8. This would be the shortest lead for UC as they continued to pull away from UNOH and win the set 25-21.
The third set began similar to the first two as the Racers took a 3-1, however the Patriots were able to recover the lead at 5-3. The rally would ensue as UC moved ahead 18-16, but UNOH fought back to take the lead at 19-18. The Patriots tied it back up at 19-19, then the Racers scored their final point of the night to retake the lead at 20-19. Cumberlands recorded the final six points of the set to clinch the set and match with a 25-20 final.
Koch again led the Patriots in kills with 14,
Abbie Genders chipped in nine. Genders had the sole block of the match. Routliffe also led again with 16 digs. Short recorded 35 assists, eight digs, and two aces, while
Megan Willoughby had two aces of her own in the match.
The Patriots will be back on the court Friday, August 25 in Athens, TN for a matchup against the Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan. First serve is set for 6 pm.
