Patriots Fall to the Eagles 3-0

Wilmore, KY – The Patriots were defeated by the Eagles of Asbury College on Thursday. The Eagles swept UC in three straight sets, 25-20, 35-33, 25-23. The Patriots fall to 4-3 on the year while Asbury improves to 5-1.

The match began as a steady fight to take the first set. UC took a 5-3 lead, but the Eagles tied it up then stole the lead at 9-7. The Patriots rallied back to take back the lead at 12-10. Asbury battled back to take over the lead at 15-14 before the Patriots worked their way back to retake the lead at 17-16. However, the Eagles went on to push away from UC as they tallied the next nine of 12 points and win the set 25-20.

In the second set, Cumberlands started in control the second set as they moved ahead 18-13. The Eagles wouldn't go down easy and used a 6-1 run to tie the match up at 19-19. Continuing the rally, Asbury took over the lead at 21-20, but UC put up their own rally and went ahead 23-21. From there, the match was back-and-forth to take the set win as each team exchanged points. The Eagles found the groove and captured the final two points to win the set 35-33.

The Eagles came out strong in the third set, quickly jumping ahead 8-4. UC worked their way back to capture the lead at 10-9 then pushed ahead 12-10. Asbury tallied the next five of six points to retake the lead at 15-13. The Patriots followed the trend and took back their lead at 17-15. Asbury moved back in the lead 18-17, but again Cumberlands took it back 20-19. For the final lead exchange, the Eagles took over at 22-21 and never looked back. Asbury won the third set, 25-23, to earn the win in the match.

Earning her second double-double in the season, Jessica Severs had 12 kills and ten digs paired with an assisted block. Abbie Genders and Mackenzie Koch each gathered nine kills on the night; Genders also recorded five assisted blocks and two digs while Koch notched three assisted blocks and three digs. Megan Jackson, Lynsey Short, and Megan Willoughby each earned an ace in the match. Jackson also had six kills and three blocks (two assisted and one solo). Short led the team in assists at 34. Tara Routliffe had 25 digs in the match as Willoughby contributed 13 of her own.

Next up, the Patriots will be hosting the Tigers of Campbellsville on Tuesday, September 5 to begin Mid-South Conference play. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the UC Volleyball Gym.
