Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

LeMaster’s Golden Goal Give Patriots 1-0 Win over Union

Barbourville, KY – Jody LeMaster netted the game-winning goal in the 102' minute to give the University of the Cumberlands Women's Soccer Team a 1-0 win over Union in double overtime Tuesday night at Williamson Stadium.  With the win the Patriots improve to 4-2, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-5-1.

"We were struggling to get the ball forward and before the start of overtime Coach (Steve Hamilton) told us we need to start connecting passes and working our way up the field," said LeMaster. "This created more chances and when the opportunity finally came we capitalized."

Cumberlands came out strong right from the start outshooting Union 8-1 in the first half.  Rachel Palazzo put a pair of free kicks on target within the first ten minutes but was unable to convert. The Patriots looked to take the lead at the 8:11 mark as LeMaster sent a shot towards the goal but it hit off the post. UC kept the ball on their offensive half for majority of the opening half and put three more shots on goal, but Juliana Schardong made the saves for Union to keep the game scoreless at the break.

The Patriots continued to dominate the possession battle in the second half.  Ten minutes into the half, UC looked to get on the board as Hannah Truckenmiller, Mackenzie Novak, and LeMaster each put a shot on target but three saves by the Bulldogs kept the game even. Schardong made two saves late in regulation to keep the game tied 0-0 and force overtime.

Midway through the first overtime Randez fired a shot but couldn't convert forcing a second overtime. Just over a minute into the second overtime, Randez crossed the ball into the box to LeMaster who netted the golden goal for the 1-0 win.

The goal was LeMaster's fifth of the season, while Randez dished out her first assist of her collegiate career.  UC's backline of Erin Bolas, Alexis Dreier, Palazzo, and Emily Willoughby limited the Bulldogs to three shots, none of which were on goal.  Christie Funk earned her second shutout of the season and the tenth of her career.

The win is Cumberlands first overtime win since September 17, 2017 against West Virginia Tech. In that game LeMaster scored the golden goal off an Erin Bolas pass in the 95th minute.

The Patriots will return to action Friday, September 15, when they travel to Wilmore, KY to face Asbury.  The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and live video is available here, while live stats are available here.
