Williamsburg, KY – The University of the Cumberlands (UC) volleyball team took on the 18th-ranked Tigers of Georgetown College for a Mid-South Conference (MSC) matchup. The Tigers took the 3-0 win over the Patriots by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-20. With the win Georgetown improves to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the MSC while UC falls to 5-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The first set started in the Patriots' favor with a 3-1 lead, however the Tigers quickly tied the match at 3-3. After some back-and-forth, Georgetown took over the lead at 8-5. The Tigers would remain in control of the set and held an eight point lead at 16-8. UC couldn't muster the comeback as the Tigers won the first set 25-17.
In the second set, the Patriots again jumped ahead but just like before the Tigers tied the set at 4-4. UC took a point then the Tigers took three for a 7-5 lead. Cumberlands again tied it up at 7-7 before Georgetown took control with seven straight points for a 14-7 lead. The Patriots were able to shorten the Tigers' lead to 17-15, however the Tigers pushed ahead to 20-16. UC pieced together three points to come within a point to Georgetown. The Tigers had their own three point run to push ahead to 23-19 then continued the rally to go on and win the set 25-23.
Cumberlands started the third set with three straight points for a 3-0 lead. Georgetown was able to take over the lead at 5-4, however the Patriots took it back at 6-5. The Tigers would again steal the lead at 8-6 and move ahead to 13-8. UC would bring the score closer to 17-14, but Georgetown extended the lead to 22-15. Cumberlands then had a four point run to shrink the Tiger lead to 22-19, however the Tigers were able to gather their final three points to win the set 25-20.
Offensively, Mackenzie Koch gathered eight kills while Jessica Severs and Megan Willoughby each earned four. Severs, Lynsey Short, and Jen Stein each had an ace each. Short also tallied 17 assists on the night, while Tara Routliffe led the Patriots in digs at 22, Willoughby with seven and Severs with six. Megan Jackson had seven blocks in the match.
The Patriots return to the court on Saturday, September 23 to take on Brenau University and Union College in Barbourville, KY. UC will face Brenau at 1 pm followed with Union at 3 pm.
