Patriots Fall to Top-Ranked Red Hawks

9/22/2017 11:30:00 PM

Box Score Pulaski, TN – Martin Methodist has advanced to the NAIA National Championships in each of the past four seasons and on Friday night the Red Hawks showed why they are the top-ranked team in the country.  Four different players scored at least one goal en route to 12-1 win over the Patriots.  With the win the Red Hawks improve to 9-0, while UC falls to 4-4.

The Patriots were forced into a defensive stance early as Miku Sunaga netted a goal five minutes into the contest.  The teams traded possession over the course of the next ten minutes until Sunaga connected with the back of the net in the 16' minute to give Martin Methodist a 2-0 lead.  The Red Hawks added a pair of goals to take a 4-0 lead into the break.

It was a similar story in the second half as Millene Cabral and Riko Sagara combined to score six of the next eight goals to extend Martin Methodist's lead to 12-0 with 68:18 remaining.  Cumberlands got on the board minutes later as Sage Hunley connected with Jody LeMaster for a goal to make it 12-1.  The Patriots tried to rally but couldn't pull any closer.

Hunley's assist was the first of her career, while LeMaster netted her seventh goal of the season.  Christie Funk and Samantha Moses combined for five saves in the contest.

The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, September 26, when they travel to Lebanon, TN to face 23rd-ranked Cumberland. UC's Mid-South Conference opener is slated to begin at 2 p.m. and live video is available here, while live stats are available here.
