Volleyball Upended by #3 Blue Raiders

Columbia, KY – The Patriots faced defeat on Thursday in a MSC matchup against the third-ranked Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College. Lindsey Wilson took the win 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-9, 25-16. The Blue Raiders stay perfect with a 16-0 record and a 6-0 MSC record, while UC falls to 7-8 overall and 1-4 in conference.

The first set started in Lindsey Wilson's favor as they took a quick 3-0 lead. UC shortened the Blue Raider lead to 8-6, but Lindsey Wilson continued to outscore the Patriots and move ahead 17-10. Cumberlands pieced together a pair of points reduce the lead to 17-12, however the Blue Raiders were persistent and won the first set 25-14.

In the second set, the Blue Raiders started with a huge rally to jump ahead 11-2. UC slowly chipped at the lead, but Lindsey Wilson continued to push away to dominate the set 25-9. The third set started with another rally by the Blue Raiders as they took a 7-2 lead. Cumberlands shortened the lead to four, but Lindsey Wilson went on to increase their lead to 16-6 after a five point run. The Patriots took the next seven of ten points to bring the Blue Raider lead to 19-13. Despite the battle by UC, Lindsey Wilson rallied to win the third set 25-16 for the 3-0 final. 

Abbie Genders and Jessica Severs each had four kills on the night while Mackenzie Koch chipped in three of her own. Lynsey Short had 14 assists in the match. Tara Routliffe led the team with 11 digs while Severs tallied six. Routliffe had the sole ace for the Patriots. Megan Jackson and Genders each had three assisted blocks with Severs and Koch earning two assisted blocks apiece.  

Cumberlands will be back on the court at home on Friday, September 29 for a match against the Bulldogs of Union College. In their last matchup on Saturday, September 23, the Bulldogs took a 3-1 win over the Patriots. First serve for Friday is set for 6 pm.
