Patriots Take the 1-1 Draw against Huntington

Williamsburg, KY -  The University of the Cumberlands Men's Soccer Team forced a 1-1 draw on Monday afternoon against Huntington University at the UC Soccer Complex. With the draw the Patriots move to 2-1-2 and Huntington moves to 1-1-2
 
The Foresters came out firing shots, two of them being blocked by the Patriots, Smith Pepper and Blagoje Tokovic. Filip Milivojevic kicked a great shot to the goal, but Huntington's goalie Troy Hester was there for the save. Ten minutes later Cumberlands scored their only goal of the contest with a goal by Joel Caldwell assisted by Joel Drewery to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead with 20:03 remaining in the first half.  UC looked to extend their lead late in the opening but the shot was saved keeping the score 1-0 at the break.

Both teams continued their physical play in the second half and in the 70' minute the Patriots found themselves two men down which forced them into a defensive stance. Cumberlands defense came up big led by goalie Ahmed Ghatwary, who recorded nine saves in the half.  The Patriots tried to extend their lead in the 82' minute but Drewery's shot was blocked by Troy Hester. The score remained 1-0 until the 84' minute when Huntington scored their only goal of the contest off the foot of Jake Erlandson with an assist by Guilherme Lins Souza evening the score at 1-1.  Ghatwary made three saves in the final six minutes of regulation to force overtime. 
 
Huntington continued to dominate the possession during the first overtime and got off two shots but neither were on target.  UC's best opportunity came in the final seconds of the first overtime as Aleksa Blagovic crossed the ball to Nicklas Nancke, who headed it towards the goal, but it hit off the post as time expired keep the score tied at 1-1 at the first overtime. Ghatwary made three more saves in the second overtime to give him 12 saves during the contest and give the Patriots the 1-1 draw.

In the draw UC was outshot 30-7. Today's game marked the third time in Ghatwary's career that he made ten or more saves in a game. Offensively the Patriots were led by Caldwell who recorded his first goal of the season, while Drewery had one shot and dished out an assist.

The Patriots will return to action on Saturday, September 9, at 3:00 p.m. at the UC Soccer Complex when they will face Tennessee Wesleyan University. Live video of the game will be available here, while live stats are available here.
