Men’s Soccer Falls To Tennessee Wesleyan 3-1

Athens, TN – The (RV) University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback in a nonconference match at Tennessee Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon.

The match began with neither team taking control early on as much of the play in the first five minutes was in the midfield area. However, Cumberlands (6-3-2) would strike first as Sergio Infantes beat a defender off the dribble in the seventh minute and placed a shot past the Tennessee Wesleyan (9-4-0) goalkeeper into the lower-right corner of the net. As the half went on, the Bulldogs started getting more offensive chances that would result in two first half goals — both coming off of free kicks — to put the Patriots down 2-1 going into halftime. Tennessee Wesleyan's first goal was scored by Gabriel Gonzalez on a free kick from outside the top of the 18-yard box in the 23' minute. Gonzalez's shot found the top-left portion of the net to tie the match. The second Bulldog goal was scored in the 26' minute. Kyle Wynne took a free kick from outside the top-right part of the 18-yard box and his cross was hit into the net by George Green.

In the second half, the Patriots attempted to make a comeback. Infantes had the Patriots' best chance of the half when he launched a high shot from outside the top left of the 18-yard box in the 63' minute, but the Bulldogs' goalkeeper jumped and got his fingers on the ball to redirect it over the top of the net. Cumberlands was unable to put another shot on goal in the match and Tennessee Wesleyan's Harry Baggaley added an insurance goal in the 79' minute to make the final score 3-1. Baggaley took a pass from Tom Lake and fired a shot from 20 yards out into the right side of the net. UC had a couple of free kick opportunities from distance in the final ten minutes of the match, but nothing came of them as time ran out on the Patriots' comeback attempt.

The Patriots were outshot 18-7, including 8-2 in shots on goal, in the match.

Infantes, who has scored three goals in the last two matches, is third on the team with five this season.

Cumberlands' goalkeeper Clement May (5-3-2) made five saves, while Nick Croucher stopped one shot for Tennessee Wesleyan.

The Patriots return to MSC play at Life University on Tuesday, October 16 in Marietta, GA. Live Stats are available here, while live video is available here.
