Valley, AL – UC Football continued their winning ways on Saturday as they traveled south to take on the Skyhawks of Point University. Cumberlands would rack up over 400 yards of offense on the day as they simply overmatched and overpowered Point in a 38-7 conference victory. The win improves UC to 7-1 overall on the year and 2-1 in Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division play.
Both teams struggled to get their offenses going in the opening quarter, but UC would break the ice on their opening drive with a 27 yard field goal by
Devon McMillin, giving the Patriots a 3-0 lead that they would carry into the second quarter. With possession as the first quarter ended, UC continued a solid drive that included a 51 yard run by
Jaylen Odom, getting the ball to the Point 24 yard line. The Pats capped off the ten-play drive with a three yard TD run by
Milton Shelton to extend the lead. The PAT by McMillin was good, making it 10-0 Cumberlands. After trading possessions, UC would quickly work their way back down the field to paydirt. A 34-yard reception from
Railond Garrett to
Austin Ysidro set up a three yard score on the ground by
Jaylen Odom. The point after was good, extending the Patriots lead to 17-0 at the half.
Beginning the half with the ball, UC continued to push forward. On the fifth play of the half, Garrett would scramble and scamper down the sideline 38 yards for the score. The extra point from McMillin was good, making it 24-0 Patriots entering the fourth quarter. Cumberlands would put together another ten-play drive on their first possession of the quarter capped by a four yard TD run from
Zalon Reynolds to extend the lead once more. The point after by McMillin was good, pushing the score to 31-0 UC.
Point would finally put an end to UC's scoring streak which ended at 98 straight points on a four play drive and a ten yard run by John Eilum into the endzone for a Skyhawk score. The PAT by Wesley Rubiera was good, cutting the lead to 31-7 Cumberlands.
John Owens would then come in at quarterback for the Patriots and lead the team down the field on another scoring drive. This one covered just four plays and 41 yards ending with a 30 yard TD pass from Owens to
T.J. Williams. The McMillin PAT was good, giving UC the 38-7 win.
The two Patriots QBs (Garrett and Owens) combined to go 12-22 through the air for 215 yards and a score with no interceptions. Three Patriots tallied over 60 yards rushing on the game with a score. Odom ended the night with 9 carries for 66 yards and a score. Garrett added 64 yards on 10 carries with a TD while
Milton Shelton carried the ball 19 times for 60 yards and a score. Reynolds added the final score on seven carries for 26 yards. Williams led the way receiving with three grabs for 67 yards and a score. Ysidro,
Joronnie Hinton, and
Jaron Hull each hauled in a pair of passes as well.
Defensively, UC combined for a pair of sacks, ten tackle loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and an interceptions. Leading the way was
Jeremiah Baker with ten tackles (nine solo) with 3.5 tackles for loss, and a sack.
Tyler Pendleton added eight tackles while
Adam Johnson pitched in six tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack.
The Patriots return home to James H. Taylor, II Stadium on Saturday, October 20
th for Homecoming as they host Bluefield College. Kickoff is set for 7 pm. Last season, Bluefield upended the Patriots 22-10 at Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield. Live video of Saturday's game will be available on the UC Sports Network or by clicking
