Patriots Drop Five Set Match to Georgetown

Georgetown, KY – UC Volleyball team had the lead twice, however it wasn't enough as the Patriots fall to Georgetown in a five sets conference match 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 25-23, 12-25, 5-15) Thursday night.  With the win the Tigers improve to 17-10 and 9-2 against the MSC while the Patriots fall to 16-10 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

It was a back-and-forth match right from the first serve as the two teams were tied six times to open the first set.  The Patriots got a block and kill from Lily Chapman as part of a 4-0 run to take a 9-6 lead.  Georgetown evened the score at 9-9 before the teams traded points three more times.  With the match tied 12-12, Ashley Sobocinski posted a kill, off a Lynsey Short assist, to spark a 4-0 run. Georgetown was able to cut the lead to one point on three separate occasions however a pair of kills from Mackenzie Koch gave UC the first set 25-22 and the 1-0 lead.

Georgetown jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set and used three 3-0 runs to take the set 25-17 and tie the match 1-1.

Cumberlands responded strong in the third set, taking an early 6-4 lead behind four kills from Koch.  The Tigers evened the score before UC went on a 6-1 run to retake the lead 12-7.  A couple points later, Short found Chapman for a kill to give the Patriots a 15-10 lead, their largest lead of the set. From that point Georgetown used a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 17-16 however UC responded with a 4-1 run of their own.  The Tigers eventually tied the set 23-23 before back-to-back kills from Koch and Megan Jackson clinched the set for the Patriots, 25-23, and gave Cumberlands a 2-1 edge.

Cumberlands took an early 3-2 lead in the fourth set.  Georgetown went on a 9-1 run to take the lead and then used a pair of four-point runs to win the set 25-12 and force a fifth set.  The two teams traded points to begin the set with Sobocinski tallying a kill to cut the deficit to 5-4. However, Georgetown was too much for the Patriots as they scored ten of the final 11 points of the match to take the set 15-5 and the 3-2 win.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Chapman, who tallied 16 kills, four digs, and two blocks. Koch added ten kills, while Sobocinski finished with nine kills and 13 digs.  Short dished out 39 assists in the contest, while Tara Routliffe made a team-high 20 digs with Jennifer Stein chipping in 13 digs.

The Patriots will return to action Saturday, October 20, when they travel to Barbourville, KY for a tri-match. Cumberlands will face Allen at 1 p.m., before taking on Union at 3 p.m. with live stats for both matches available here.
