Pikeville, KY – The UC volleyball team had nine different players record at least one kill as the Patriots swept Pikeville 3-0 (25-6, 25-18, 25-18) in MSC play Friday night at the UPike Gym. With the win the Patriots improve to 14-7 overall and 4-3 in MSC play, while the Bears fall to 9-14 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
Pikeville took the first point of the match before UC took control of the game scoring 12 unanswered points. That run was aided by
Lily Chapman's five services aces and two kills. After trading points, Cumberlands scored four straight, including
Anna Zuniga dishing out three assists, to extend the lead to 17-3. Pikeville cut the lead to 18-6, however that was the closest they got as the Patriots notched seven straight points to take the set 25-6.
UC's strong play continued in the second set as Chapman and
Ashley Sobocinski tallied back-to-back kills to start the set. Pikeville responded scoring eight of the next 12 points to take an 8-6 lead, before a
Leah Crist block tied the score at 8-8. The set was tied two more times, before UC posted three straight points to take a 13-10 lead. The Patriots took six of the next nine points to extend their lead to 19-13, before the Bears cut the lead to 19-17. From that point Cumberlands won six of the next seven points, capped off by a Chapman kill, to take the set 25-18 and extend their lead to 2-0.
It was a similar story in the third set as UC took advantage of Pikeville miscues to take a 5-1 advantage. The two teams traded points until a pair of Jen Stein service aces extended the Patriots lead to 11-5. Pikeville won seven of the next nine points to cut the lead to 13-12, however that was the closest the Bears got as Cumberlnads scored three straight points to regain control. UC got back-to-back kills by
Megan Jackson to close out the set 25-18 and take the match 3-0.
Chapman led the way for the Patriots with a career-high six service aces, seven kills, and nine digs, while Crist tied a season-high with seven kills. Stein finished with three service aces and five digs, while Routliffe tallied a team-high 14 digs.
Lynsey Short and Zuniga dished out 13 and 11 assists, respectfully.
The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, October 9, when they travel to Lebanon, TN to face Cumberland. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. with live stats available
