Tenacious Defense, Sharpshooting from Deep Leads Patriots to Win at Coastal Georgia

Brunswick, GA – The University of the Cumberlands Women's Wrestling team used a combination of excellent defense as well as perfect shooting from behind the three-point line to be successful on Saturday against the Mariners of the College of Coastal Georgia in a 60-45 win. The victory improves the Patriots to 5-1 overall on the season.

The first quarter saw UC open the game on a 10-2 run over the first three and a half minutes including five points form Shayla Simpson. Although the Marines would work their way back into the game a bit, the Patriots would hold a 14-7 lead at the end of the quarter. CCG would begin the second on their own 8-3 run to cut the deficit to just two at 17-15, but that's when the Cumberlands' offense would awaken. A 14-2 run for the Patriots would push the lead back out to 14 at 31-17 with just over a minute to play in the half. The Mariners would press on the offensive side of the ball to bring the gap to ten at the half with UC leading 31-21.

A back-and-forth third quarter of play would see UC's lead grow as large as 17 points but would come back down to 14 at the end of the frame as the Patriots led 49-35 with ten minutes to play. A 9-0 run to begin the fourth quarter would extend UC's margin to 22 at 58-36. Coastal Georgia would close the game on a 9-2 run, but the lead was too large as Cumberlands would earn the 60-45 win over the Mariners.

Sharpshooting from deep was key for the Patriots in the win as Cumberlands shot 47.1% from the floor, but a perfect 7-7 from beyond the arc in the win. UC was led by Shayla Simpson with 22 points (4-4 3 PT) along with five rebounds and a pair of steals. Kayla Bruner added 13 points with four rebounds. Jasmine Rhodes chipped in eight points with six rebounds in the win.

The Mariners were held to just 30% from the field in the game and 45.2% from the free throw line. CCG was led in the game by Brianna Gipson with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Patriots return to action on the road on Thursday, November 15th as they travel to take on the Tornadoes of Talladega College. UC fell in their contest earlier in the season to the Tornadoes 91-69 in Williamsburg. Tip-off is set for 5 pm.
