New Albany, IN – The 21
st-ranked UC men's basketball team had four players in double-figures as the Patriots defeat IU Southeast 94-84 to give Head Men's Basketball Coach Don Butcher his 400
th career-win Saturday afternoon. With the win the Patriots improve to 10-2 overall, while the Grenadiers fall to 8-5.
Both teams came out strong as the game was tied three times in the first five minutes, before
Jahi Hinson drained a three-pointer to give the Patriots their first lead at 9-6. IU Southeast retook the lead however
Jordan Griggs and Hinson combined for five straight points to put UC in front 14-11 with 13:56 remaining in the first half. The Patriots used a 9-2 run, over a five-minute span, to extend their lead to 23-15 with 8:44 left. IU Southeast cut the lead to a point, however
Malik Colvin-Seldon converted a pair of free throws coupled with a
Caleb Taylor field goal kept Cumberlands in front 33-30. The Patriots ended the half on a 7-4 run to take a 40-34 lead into the break.
IU Southeast began the second half on a 7-2 run, but Hinson converted a three-point play to give Cumberlands a 45-41 advantage just over two minutes in. Minutes later the Grenadiers used an 8-1 run to take a 52-50 lead with 15:22 remaining, their first lead since the 14:30 mark of the first half. After IU Southeast extended their lead to four points, 59-55, the Patriots tallied nine unanswered points, including four from Colvin-Seldon to take a 64-59 lead with 11:25 remaining. Both offensive continued to hit shots, which eventually saw the game tied at 66-66 midway through the second half.
Austin Hall drained a pair of three-points, over the next minute to put UC in front. IU Southeast went on an 8-3 run to retake the lead 76-75 with 6:26 remaining. That was their final lead of the game however as Cumberlands notched 11 straight points, including six from
Danny Butt, to take an 86-76 edge. Both teams scored eight points over the final four minutes for the 94-84 final.
Butcher becomes the second coach in program history with 400 career-wins, joining Randy Vernon. He has improved his career record to 400-186 and average 21.1 wins per season over his 19-year career with UC.
Colvin-Seldon netted a season-high 26 points to lead the way for the Patriots, while Hinson recorded 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Butt and Hall finished with a career-high of 14 and 11 points, respectfully.
Nnamdi Van Dulm grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with eight points.
UC returns to action Saturday, December 15, as they host Johnson University at 2 p.m. in the O. Wayne Rollins Center. Live video of the game is available
