Williamsburg, KY – The UC Women's Basketball team was looking for win number ten on the 2018-2019 season on Saturday, but they would have to avenge an earlier season loss to get it as they hosted the Tigers of Voorhees College. Although the Tigers would use their full court press to attempt to cause fits for the Patriots, UC would find their ways through and with a big second half would pull away with a 78-50 win. The victory moves Cumberlands to 10-3 on the season.
UC opened the game on a 14-5 run midway through the first quarter. In the final five minutes of the same frame, Voorhees would go on a 9-2 run on their own as the Patriots would lead by two after ten minutes of play 16-14. Cumberlands would get their lead back out to eight during the second quarter, but the Tigers would continue to battle back each time. UC would edge out Voorhees in the quarter to take a 33-28 lead at the halftime break.
In the second half, UC would make adjustments that would foil the Tigers' plans. After Voorhees cut the lead back to three at 39-36 with six minutes left in the third quarter, UC would go on an 18-3 run to take a 57-39 lead into the fourth. There, UC would continue to pull away as UC would outscore the Tigers 21-11 in the final ten minutes to win by 28, their fifth win by 20 points or more.
Shayla Simpson would lead the way for the Patriots with 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
Callia Cropp added 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals while
Hannah Lawson chipped in 13 points, five assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
Jasmine Rhodes tallied just six points in the contest but hauled in a team-best 12 rebounds. The Patriots shot 42.2% from the floor and nearly 47% from deep.
Voorhees went just shy of 30% from the field but went 7-23 from beyond the three point arc. Leading the way for the Tigers was Ca'washa Ceasar with 20 points and three rebounds. Voorhees committed 22 turnovers in the game and would score just five points off of UC turnovers.
The Patriots go on the road next Saturday, December 15
th as they will face the Grenadiers of IU-Southeast. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
