Williamsburg, KY – A slow start in the first quarter would plague the UC Women's Basketball team on Saturday as they traveled to take on the NAIA third-ranked Tigers of Campbellsville University. After falling behind by 12 after the first quarter of play, UC found a rhythm and were able to matchup with the Tigers, but it was a little too late as Campbellsville would eventually pull away in the fourth with an 84-66 win over the Patriots. The loss pushes the Patriots to 15-9 overall on the year (3-7 MSC).
Campbellsville's offense would come out strong against UC as they would open the game on a 17-3 run in the first 4:48 of the contest. UC would get the lead back down to 10 with 3:30 to go, but the Tigers would continue to push their offense, eventually ending the quarter up 23-11. Both teams would eventually end up trading baskets throughout the second as UC would win the quarter by an 18-17 margin to trail 40-29 at the half.
The third was much of the same from the second for both teams. The Tigers would open the quarter on a 10-0 run, but UC would quickly cut back into that lead with an 11-0 run of their own to trail 50-40 with 3:30 to play in the third. Campbellsville would end the quarter slightly extending their lead to 12 at 58-46 entering the fourth. There, both teams would see their most prolific quarter of play. UC would do everything in their power to cut into the lead, scoring their game-high 20 points in the final 10 minutes, but the Tigers responded with 26 points of their own to pull away for the 18-point win over the Patriots.
Cheyenne Madden would lead the way for UC with 24 points (9-10 FG) five rebounds, and thre steals.
Kayla Bruner would add 20 points and three assists in the loss. The Patriots shot 44% from the field, but went just 55.6% from the charity stripe (15-27). Cumberlands would outrebound the Tigers 32-27, but would commit 24 turnovers (6 unassisted) which produced 26 points for Campbellsville while CU notched 42 points in the paint in the game.
UC now turns their attention back on the road for Thursday, February 14
th as they travel to Columbia, Kentucky to take on the NAIA ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm eastern time.
