Patriots Pound Eagles for Fifth Straight Win

Williamsburg, KY – Using only one extra base hit in the entire game, the UC Baseball team would push 15 runs across home plate on their way to a 15-5 mid-week run-rule victory over the Eagles of Asbury University. The win is the fifth straight for the Patriots and improves Cumberlands to 9-3 overall on the season.

It was a score early and often type game for UC as they would find their first runs of the contest in the bottom of the second inning. After J.C. Santos reached on an error and Alex Dominguez singling through the right side, Bryan Benz would get the only extra base hit of the night for the Patriots, a three-run home run on a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right field, to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead. It was the second home run of the season for Benz.

UC would then go on to score two in the third, one on a fielder's choice and another on a balk, to take a 5-0 lead. Asbury would score four runs of their own in the fourth, but UC would answer back quickly. The Patriots would score three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, making it 8-4 UC. Asbury would score another run in the fifth, but again, Cumberlands would answer right back in the bottom of the inning. A two-run single by Roberto Prado and a RBI groundout by Britton Elmore put UC out front 11-5. UC added one run in the sixth and three more in the eighth to end the game via run rule 15-5.

The win would go to Hampton Clark in relief as he went 2.1 innings allowing one earned run on one hit and four walks while striking out four. Starter Manny Castellano got his first start of the season, going 3.2 innings allowing four earned runs on four hits and a walk while sitting one down on strikes.

The Patriots will now have a few days off before hosting Huntington University for a single game on Friday, March 2nd. First pitch is set for 3 pm at Doyle Buhl Stadium. It is the first of five contests on the weekend scheduled for the Patriots.
